Student comments reflecting scaled item content about environmental conditions that hindered learning were also unequally distributed. Of the four statements with frequency over 10, two related to staff being unwilling to help or unreceptive to students (Learning Support), and two identified a lack of learning opportunities related to “hands on” learning and variety of patients. A listing of the most frequent student comments about aspects of the environment that hindered learning appears in table 17. Only six items on the scaled portion of the inventory were not specifically addressed by students in their narrative comments: numbers 4, 11, 22, 23, 28, and 29. Item numbers 23 (“The environment provided an atmosphere conducive to learning”) and 29 (“I was successful in meeting most of my learning goals”) were fairly broad in nature. In the open-ended questions, students were asked to identify aspects of the clinical setting that helped and hindered learning, and so would be expected to identify specific characteristics of the environment, rather than broad statements. Item numbers 22 and 28 addressed students helping each other in the clinical setting and the instructor encouraging students to help each other and share experiences. It is interesting that respondents made very few comments about fellow students at the clinical site. Only two students responded “other students” in respect to the question about aspects of the environment that helped learning. No students identified feeling overwhelmed by the demands of their role (item 4) or the presence or absence of clear communication of patient care responsibilities (item 11) as impacting their learning in the clinical environment in response to the open ended questions. 79
