Student Narrative Responses Not Addressed by Forced-choice Item Content. Of the issues students raised in responding to the question “What aspects of this clinical setting helped/promoted your learning” that were not addressed by the forced-choice portion of the inventory, none were mentioned by more than six students. Student comments that had frequencies of three or greater are listed in Table 18. The remainder of the comments had frequencies of two or less. A few of the statements identified particular individuals who were helpful in learning or specific situations. Others were isolated comments about the particular learning environment. Student comments about aspects of the learning environment hindering learning that were not addressed specifically by the inventory were also fairly spread out among a variety of issues, with one exception. Nineteen students identified a too high student to instructor ratio as hindering their learning, a much higher frequency than any other student comments. Student comments with a frequency of three or higher about aspects of the environment that hindered learning are presented in Table 19. Generally, student comments provided support for the validity of inclusion of the forced- choice portion of the SECEE inventory. In addition, the narrative data provided valuable information about what may need to be included in future revisions of the SECEE inventory. 82
