visitors to find what they are looking for. The content was restructured, and the
new “Service” section shows the services the MPIfG offers to researchers, the media
and the interested public.
Since the MPIfG website was established in 1996, the number of visitors has
continually increased. In 1999, there were 393,129 queries, an average of 1,077 per
day, compared to 260 queries per day in 1997. At present
there is an average of about 2,500 queries per day.
By the end of 2000 about half of the website visitors
came from Germany, the rest mostly from other
European countries and the United States. Today, over
30 percent come from the United States and 20 percent
from Germany, while the rest comes from the United
Kingdom, other European countries, Canada and
Japan. Visitors are based in universities and research
institutes, government and policy-making institutions,
and the national print media.
Dialog with Decision-Makers
The transfer of knowledge from the institute’s researchers to decision-makers in
government, business, interest associations and the society at large is expedited by
the lectures, workshops and discussion forums in which the researchers participate,
and by their presence on various boards and committees involved in policymaking.
In 1999 Wolfgang Streeck was appointed by the Office of the Federal Chancellor
to the Benchmarking Group of the “Alliance for Jobs, Vocational Training
and Competitiveness.”
The Secretary of State in the Federal Ministry of Labor, Werner Tegtmeier,
invited Fritz W. Scharpf and Wolfgang Streeck to talk to officials of the Ministry
about the research at the MPIfG. In a series of four lectures in the fall of 2001, they
spoke about the European welfare state and its prospects for reform, about
European integration and social policy, “Benchmarking Germany,” and the relationship
between shareholder value and codetermination.
In November 2001 the foreign policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary
group in the Bundestag, Karl Lamers, MdB, gave an internal lecture on “German
foreign policy after September 11.”
In a lecture entitled “Perspectives on European Integration,” David Miliband,
Member of the House of Commons, explained the British view of the European
constitutional process in February 2002. Before being elected to the House of
Commons in 2001, Miliband was a close aide to Prime Minister Tony Blair.
When Germany’s President Johannes Rau made a state visit to Italy in the spring
of 2002, Wolfgang Streeck was invited to accompany him as a special guest. Dur-
