In conclusion, these results suggest that an important contribution to variability in the<br />

amplitude <strong>of</strong> EIT difference images <strong>of</strong> the lungs is the assumption <strong>of</strong> homogeneity <strong>of</strong> the<br />

background conductivity in difference image reconstruction; furthermore, modifications to<br />

image reconstruction algorithms may be able to reduce the magnitude <strong>of</strong> the variability.<br />
