The capacity of existing provision can be estimated based
on the following assumptions:
• Each court will have capacity for 116 match slots per
4 week period (12 hours Sat/Sun and 4hrs weekdays
=44hrs/2640 mins per week multiplied by 4 weeks =
10560 mins, then divided by average game length of
91 mins).
It is estimated that there is demand for 10552 match
slots per 4 week period on the following assumptions:
• Half of matches will be singles and half will be doubles
• The mean number of occasions tennis is played in a 4
week period is 4.8
There are 74 courts in the borough (including 17 courts
in schools). The overall capacity of all tennis courts in
the borough (regardless of current condition) is 8,584
match slots. According to these results, it would appear
that Brent’s existing demand is being met outside of the
borough, with a need for 91 courts and supply of only
74 courts within the borough. There are 13 dilapidated
courts that can be refurbished, leaving a need for 4 new
courts.

Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGA) /
Ball Courts
Multi-use game areas (MUGA) is the generic name
for purpose built outdoor facilities for multiple sports.
MUGA are primarily used by young people, usually for
basketball, football, tennis, hockey or netball. Some
MUGA are purpose built for 5 aside football or hockey
others are multi-use ball courts. The courts listed below
are predominantly ‘ball courts’ whilst other MUGA which
offer a surface predominantly for use by football / hockey,
have been classified under Synthetic Turf Pitches (STPs).
Quantity
There are 21 MUGAs located at 19 sites across the
borough (Roundwood Park and Roe Green have double
MUGAs) and plans for four further facilities on three
sites by spring 2009. The MUGAs within three of the
primary schools have community use agreements in place
as a requirement of the New Opportunities Fund monies
that funded the MUGAs, but several of the other school
MUGAs are not publicly accessible outside of school
hours.
