MPhil/PhD
Research in the School of Media
& Performance draws upon social
engagement, cultural observation and
state-of-the-art practice. The School
brings in to sharp focus research
questions across a range of creative
practice from photography, film and
creative writing to theatre, music
and dance. Research activities are
led by professors recognised both
academically and by the industry. The
diversity of artistic practice across
the School provides a broad scope
for research and many opportunities
for enquiry across disciplines. Digital
media, creative writing and
performance converge in the
emerging field of performance writing
to explore new genres, techniques and
interactions that will underpin the
development of electronic literature.
Working at the confluence of the
performing arts and the digital
economy, research groups are
exploring the creative boundaries of
performance as well as the potential
for digital technology to extend its form
and reach. In the last academic year
the School has attracted over £1m of
European and UK research funding.
Research degrees are an important
element of advanced practice within the
School and research degree students
are welcomed as full members of the
research community (please see p40
for more information).
