And the practical experience he gained as an MA Television Production student at Falmouth was the perfect springboard for his success. www.falmouth.ac.uk/televisionproduction “I was working as a freelance event and film festival manager interspersed with periods of travel. But I always knew I wanted to make documentaries so decided to look into doing a practical course. I happened to visit Falmouth and completely fell in love with the town. When I looked at the courses available at UCF, they did exactly the sort of course I was looking for. the facilities are really good. The edit suites are fantastic. I think I probably spent far too much time in those suites! Being able to check your own kit in and out is great too. As part of the course we had to spend a month doing a work placement – you couldn’t graduate without doing that. I did mine with TwoFour in Plymouth and was fortunate enough to receive one of their bursaries, which pays you for your work. My experience at Falmouth set me up for working in the ‘real world’. I left with a really good skill set. I see lots of work experience people now who have done other kinds of degrees and while they’re bright and want to work in TV, they can’t shoot, they can’t edit and they don’t really know what the building blocks of a programme are. I was able to walk into an entry level job and say “here are a number of films I’ve shot and edited” – and straight away I was out there shooting and cutting taster tapes. Falmouth enables you to hit the ground running. I’m now a development assistant producer for touch Productions. I’ve found a niche in development; pitching big ideas to the BBC, Discovery, Animal Planet and so on, then shooting taster tapes. last year I spent six months working in texas on a series called Dallas DnA for the Discovery Channel. I’ve also just finished my work on a new Animal Planet series called Taking on Tyson, with Mike Tyson, which is about the incredible subculture of racing pigeons – “Sopranos on the rooftops” was the pitch!
