MA International Journalism<br />

After her BA in Broadcasting and<br />

freelancing in local radio for a year,<br />

Nina Saada was looking to break<br />

into international news.<br />

Her MA in International Journalism<br />

not only enabled her to shoot an<br />

award-winning documentary in<br />

Uganda, but also paved the way for<br />

her job as assistant news editor on<br />

the International Desk at NBC News.<br />

“<strong>Falmouth</strong> has a fantastic reputation<br />

for journalism and is very well<br />

respected in the industry. Every<br />

newsroom I have ever been in has<br />

had at least one <strong>Falmouth</strong> graduate.<br />

<strong>Study</strong>ing at <strong>Falmouth</strong> was the<br />

springboard for my career in<br />

international news. The course<br />

was very vocational and hands-on<br />

and we were encouraged to stand<br />

on our own two feet and behave as<br />

industry professionals from day one.<br />

One of the best parts of the course<br />

was the three-week internship that<br />

we were required to complete. I spent<br />

mine at NBC News in London and am<br />

now employed there as an assistant<br />

news editor on the International Desk.<br />

My MA project took me to uganda<br />

where I produced my documentary<br />

Sacrificed, which not only secured<br />

my Distinction but also won me the<br />

prestigious bJtC award, along with<br />

respect and credibility among employers<br />

and other industry professionals.<br />

The project was the best thing that<br />

I have ever done and I’m still reaping<br />

the benefits over a year on.<br />

everything on the course was designed<br />

to prepare us for a professional<br />

working environment. Every skill that<br />

I learnt has definitely been transferable<br />

to the workplace, from media law training,<br />

to video editing, to social networking<br />

and setting up blogs.<br />

One of the best parts of the<br />

International Journalism course was<br />

the hostile environment and First<br />

Aid Course (heFAC). We had three<br />

days of intense training by former<br />

Marines who put us through our<br />

paces and gave us hands-on training<br />

and knowledge about how to react in<br />

dangerous environments. I graduated<br />

with a recognised HEFAC qualification<br />

and valuable knowledge about how<br />

to react in situations ranging from<br />

road traffic accidents, to coming<br />

under enemy fire in a war zone,<br />

to a kidnap scenario.<br />

If you want doors to open in the<br />

world of international news then it’s<br />

definitely worth considering this course.<br />

You only have to look at the success rate<br />

of previous years to see how effective<br />

the MA has been in helping students<br />

find work. From my year (2008/09)<br />

alone we already have people working<br />

for BBC World Service, NBC News,<br />

ITN, Reuters and more.”<br />
