Nina Saada
MA International Journalism
After her BA in Broadcasting and
freelancing in local radio for a year,
Nina Saada was looking to break
into international news.
www.falmouth.ac.uk/
internationaljournalism
Her MA in International Journalism
not only enabled her to shoot an
award-winning documentary in
Uganda, but also paved the way for
her job as assistant news editor on
the International Desk at NBC News.
“Falmouth has a fantastic reputation
for journalism and is very well
respected in the industry. Every
newsroom I have ever been in has
had at least one Falmouth graduate.
Studying at Falmouth was the
springboard for my career in
international news. The course
was very vocational and hands-on
and we were encouraged to stand
on our own two feet and behave as
industry professionals from day one.
One of the best parts of the course
was the three-week internship that
we were required to complete. I spent
mine at NBC News in London and am
now employed there as an assistant
news editor on the International Desk.
My MA project took me to uganda
where I produced my documentary
Sacrificed, which not only secured
my Distinction but also won me the
prestigious bJtC award, along with
respect and credibility among employers
and other industry professionals.
The project was the best thing that
I have ever done and I’m still reaping
the benefits over a year on.
everything on the course was designed
to prepare us for a professional
working environment. Every skill that
I learnt has definitely been transferable
to the workplace, from media law training,
to video editing, to social networking
and setting up blogs.
One of the best parts of the
International Journalism course was
the hostile environment and First
Aid Course (heFAC). We had three
days of intense training by former
Marines who put us through our
paces and gave us hands-on training
and knowledge about how to react in
dangerous environments. I graduated
with a recognised HEFAC qualification
and valuable knowledge about how
to react in situations ranging from
road traffic accidents, to coming
under enemy fire in a war zone,
to a kidnap scenario.
If you want doors to open in the
world of international news then it’s
definitely worth considering this course.
You only have to look at the success rate
of previous years to see how effective
the MA has been in helping students
find work. From my year (2008/09)
alone we already have people working
for BBC World Service, NBC News,
ITN, Reuters and more.”
