Research — Research Landscape Falmouth has a number of research clusters, which draw upon combinations of expertise in the Schools to provide a rich and supportive environment for generating and exploring new avenues of enquiry. — A snapshot of some current projects being undertaken by our staff and research students: understanding creative communities How do creative communities form and interact through distributed media? Senior Lecturer, Jerome Fletcher, is part of an international team of researchers studying the electronic literature community in Europe as a model of networked creativity and innovation in practice. Institutional partners include the University of Bergen (Norway), Blekinge Institute of Technology (Sweden), the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands) and the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). The three-year project has been awarded over £800,000 in EU research funding. Improving digital inclusion Dr Justin Marshall, in the design research group Autonomatic, has been working with computer scientists in Newcastle University’s Culture Lab on the ‘Family Hedge’. This device provides a crafted, tangible and engaging means of digitally recording and linking stories and experiences with analogue family photos and treasured objects – encouraging inclusivity and the charting of existing extended family connections in all their contemporary complexity. This is a collaborative project with the Digital World Research Centre at the University of Surrey, and the Universities of Newcastle, Dundee and Central Lancashire. The project has been awarded £894,000 by the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council. Competitive advantage through design The Department of Design has been awarded a two-year Knowledge Transfer Project (worth £120,000) by the Arts & Humanities Research Council and Technology Strategy Board. The project will enable its business partner, Woof Wear (a leader in the field of equestrian products based in Bodmin, Cornwall) to develop their in-house design and test facility, drawing upon Falmouth’s strength in 3D design, graphics, branding and performance sportswear. Through a series of increasingly complex design and product development projects, the team will help Woof Wear introduce a range of new premium equestrian products. — One of the best things about Falmouth is the range of different PhDs and research taking place. There’s expertise across a wide range of subject areas and PhD researchers have the opportunity to do an interdisciplinary or collaborative doctorate.
