Gammon Wins Science Park Contract
Gammon Construction’s expertise in
developing green projects has won the
group a HK$2.18 billion (US$281 million)
contract to build the latest stages of
the Hong Kong Science Park.
The project, which is part of the Park’s
Phase Three development, includes
the construction of three multi-storey
research and development office and
laboratory buildings with basement
carpark, services tunnels and a
link bridge.
The development will showcase
green construction technologies and
sustainable building design including
the application and installation of
natural ventilation, energy-efficient
systems and renewable energy.
Every detail will play its part in the
Science Park’s vision of being a
Astra Daihatsu Invests in Research and Development
Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM),
Southeast Asia’s largest auto
manufacturer and the Indonesian
distributor of Daihatsu vehicles, is
to invest US$66.7 million to build a
research and development centre.
targeting the Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum
standard, a world-recognized green
rating system and currently the highest
level of certification available.
“Gammon is delighted to have been
awarded this project, which recognizes
The first phase of construction
has begun with an investment of
US$15.8 million and will take about
three years to construct. This will be
followed by second and third phases,
which are estimated to cost an
additional US$52.9 million.
our technical expertise and capability
in developing green projects,” said
Gammon Chief Executive Thomas Ho.
Work on the project is due to be
completed by December 2013.
The research and development
centre will be adjacent to ADM’s
plant in Karawang, West Java where
a new factory will also be built to
boost annual production to 430,000
units from 330,000 units at a cost of
US$233.3 million.
Daihatsu is the second best-selling
brand in Indonesia with a 15.2%
market share. The Indonesian
government is encouraging other auto
manufacturers to follow ADM’s lead in
investing in research and development
centres in Indonesia that will enable
them to better market their products
to local consumers. With a growing
middle class and relatively easy access
to car loans, Indonesia is on the verge
of surpassing Thailand as Southeast
Asia’s largest car market.
