Dairy Farm’s Health & Beauty Business – Going Strong Across The Region Forty-five years after Dairy Farm opened its first Health & Beauty store in Malaysia, the business is going strong across the region. With expansion into new markets throughout Asia and continuous strategic investment over the last decade, the Health & Beauty format has grown to become one of the most important sales and profit contributors in the Dairy Farm Group. This has been achieved with clear market positioning, successful innovations and customer focus, all supported by passionate and professional teams of employees. Five years ago the Health & Beauty sector represented 23% of total Dairy Farm Group profits. Today its excellent results have taken that figure to 30%. In the interim results for the first half of 2012, the sector’s profits grew 24% over the same period last year to US$92 million. “In most countries, our business started from a community drug store serving local needs,” explained Dairy Farm Group Chief Executive Michael Kok, “and then successfully repositioned itself to become a pharmacy, health and beauty format in response to the changing consumer market and growing demand for diversified products and services. Subsequently, we have evolved to become the market leader in Health & Beauty with over 1,400 stores servicing 147 million people across our developed locations last year.” From those small beginnings as community drug stores, the Health & Beauty business today encompasses everything from healthcare products, prescribed pharmaceuticals, health supplements and over the counter medicines, to ‘head to toe’ beauty products including personal care, skin care and cosmetics as well as milk powders and other baby products. In the bigger stores, the range of products on offer can exceed 7,000. In all its markets Dairy Farm strives to customize its services and product Dairy Farm is the market leader in Health & Beauty across the region with over 1,400 stores servicing 147 million people. offerings to meet consumer demands and to quickly establish a strong presence when entering new markets. Through the Closer Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), Dairy Farm successfully entered the mainland China market in late 2004. Today it has 200 stores under the Mannings banner with Guangdong Province as its main base. In its newest market of Vietnam, where it established a presence in 2011 with the opening of the first Guardian store, Dairy Farm has expanded rapidly and expects to have 15 stores by the end of 2012. “Our strong brands, our modern store formats, and the combination of innovative merchandising and a comprehensive range of products have all helped us to maintain our leadership position across the region in this highly competitive market,” said Mr Kok. “We are committed to meeting the lifestyle needs of our customers and to doing it even better in the future.” Feature 15 Thistle vol.3 2012
