1.2 DEFINITION OF <strong>SMALL</strong> <strong>DAMS</strong><br />
For this bulletin “Small Dams” are defined as having the following characteristics:<br />

o 2,5 m < H < 15 m and H . V < 200 (*)<br />
o H is height in meters above river bed level to maximum crest level<br />
o V is storage volume in million m 3 at Maximum Operating Level = Full Supply<br />
Level in most cases.<br />
(*) Minimum dam height can be changed to 2 or 3 m in the case of dams in residential or very<br />
populated areas.<br />
Dams with 5 < H < 15 m and V > 3 hm 3 (million cubic meters) are classified as large<br />
dams according the ICOLD.<br />
For flood retention dams holding no water the storage volume at crest of spillway level<br />
(design storage volume) should be used.<br />
The classification of small dams as well as large dams is shown on Figure 1.3.<br />
