Instability of downstream slope often occurs mainly when the piezometry inside the embankment is not controlled with an adequate drainage system. High pore pressures in the 38
downstream part of the embankment may lead to circular rupture of this face, especially in case of a steep slope. Instability of upstream slope often occurs after a rapid drawdown of the reservoir, when permeability of the material is too low to allow dissipation of pore pressure (Fig. 3.10).
