The Other Death
A World for All Divided
Making heart-shaped confetti from money is the way
Adán Vallecillo has chosen to reflect on a subject matter
as ancient as art itself: the relationship between the
creation of the spirit and its exchange value. A reflection
that goes beyond the limits of the Honduran context
and its problems, to venture into a more universal
scope. Market and art make up a binomial somewhat
hard to balance; one depends on the other, and the
growth of one of them is never detrimental to the other.
Fundamental, necessary, inevitable, the market is one
of the most controversial factors for modern day art in
the four corners of the world, and it has to be taken in
consideration quickly and meticulously. Flirting with a
not always very strict market has become an arduous
undertaking for the marginal artists, those who, far away
from the center where the big transactions are being
made, have to adjust themselves to certain requisites to
be assimilated by a marketplace that, in addition to the
economic perks, brings legitimation and a big dose of
visibility—both of which, by the way, do not necessarily
reward quality.
In a naïve attempt to disturb such a convoluted,
impassive relationship, Vallecillo invites the audience
to punch holes in real bills, holes in the hearts, as if
the choice of such a delicate shape could mitigate the
violence of the act of destroying a bill, imposing violence
on what constitutes the material symbol of wealth per
se, a wealth yearned for and courted by the developing
countries. In a certain way, by reflecting on the evident
