Geografía y memoria 5.4 Geography And Memory
hondureños como Froylán Turcios y Juan Ramón Molina;
“Identity isn’t just a subjective, individual question. It
is, of course, an identity but it also must be inserted in
the world. For instance, earth, the territory and landscape
are identity characteristics for me. I look in them as if I
was a mirror. 27
Leonardo Gonzáles and Hugo Ochoa have learned
better than any other artists the identity charasterics of
landscape and territory.
The first artist’s work called Accion para limpiar
el rio Choluteca takes us to the urban landscape as a
space for tension, memories and utopias. Choluteca
is not a common river, it’s the memorable keepsake
of grandparents that swam peacefully in waters that
inspired the first poetic images of Honduran modernists
like Froylán Turcios and Juan Ramon Molina; it’s a
meeting point, a dividing line between Comayaguela’s
abandonment and the pretentious Tegucigalpa. It’s
also an emblem of the city, its memory, the natural
catastrophe and the poverty. Their causes expand and
shrink so fast; it could be fearful in winter and fragile and
repulsive in the summer. It keeps the indigents’ secrets,
the drunkards, whores and murderers that would wander
off by their shores; its waters drag bodies of people,
houses remains, poultry farms, slaughterhouses and
markets.
One day the Choluteca River turned into a lake of death
and putrefaction. It was in the year 1988 during tropical
storming Mitch that lashed the national territory for
several days killing thousands of people and animals. The
impact was a catastrophe of great magnitude in all the
national territory, showing the evidence of that fragility
in our infrastructure and the vulnerability of the poverty
class who would die as flies due to the collapses and
