A new milestone in structural and hydraulic engineering for OHL
Water intake at the Mequinenza reservoir
OHL has completed the project “Transformación en
Zaragoza. This project is the largest public irrigation
project executed by the Government of Aragon to
date. What makes this project unique is the water
intake at the reservoir, which represents a milestone
in structural and hydraulic engineering in OHL.
Before it reaches the fi elds, the water starts in the Mequinenza
reservoir on the Ebro River in the province of
Zaragoza. A fl oating intake raises the water to a height
of 260 m, where it is carried through 6 km of pipe to the
regulation pond. A direct pump station is located next to
the pond and distributes the water through two distribution
networks.
There are 1,534 hectares of traditionally dry-farmed cropland
for irrigation, which are suitable for the implementation
of on-demand drip irrigation systems thanks to
the system’s centralized remote control. This simplifi es
automation and rationalizes irrigation, minimizing water
loss and allowing sustainable water management.
