Its design process was very innovative applying rheologicalstudies. This product, in the future, was destined to become one of thecommercial mainstays of HIMEL.367
Ello podía llegar a encarecer extraordinariamenteel proyecto. The ‘Apollo Project’: PLAAnother large-scale project for the future of HIMEL was the‘Apollo’, which was started in 1996 under Enric Barbany. Amarket study was conducted in December 1997. The aimwas to create a cabinet to slow down the growing competitionand nurture HIMEL’s modest growth in this market segment. An indicator of this is that the level of units of PL soldby HIMEL between 1991 and 1993 had reached around15,000-16,000 units to fall in 1994 and 1995 to around12,000. The project was also run in coordination in the EAE.The aim was to replace the old PL, to which effect it wasstated that ‘although industrial products of this type have along life, it is clear that it is necessary to renew the product. This renewal cannot be done in any other way than creatinga whole new range of cabinets’. The problem came fromthe outset, as the moulds displayed a number of problemsand led to losses of characteristics with regard to their originaldesign. Added to this were the costs, the limited rangeof accessories and the dimensions. In short, the PL was anobsolete product that needed urgent modernisation. Theaim of extending the range on offer had an indirect drawback, namely the need for a large number of moulds, whichcould make the project become extraordinarily expensive. To solve this problem, technology was applied that wasaimed at savings in the manufacture of moulds. This wouldvery noticeably reduce the stoppage time for making changes. The new PL, under the commercial name of PLA, wasfinally first marketed in May 1999, although this did not meanthe complete elimination of PL, which is still manufacturedtoday. Consequently, an aid was applied for from the CDTI(‘Centre for Industrial Technological Development’), part ofthe Ministry of Industry, in the ATYCA programme.368
