Apesar <strong>de</strong> ello su centro neurálgico y <strong>la</strong> tesorería sesituaron en <strong>la</strong> is<strong>la</strong> <strong>de</strong> Delos hasta el 454 a.C., año en elque finalmente se tras<strong>la</strong>dó a Atenas.Liga Focea: Confe<strong>de</strong>ración <strong>de</strong> doce poleis jónicas, <strong>de</strong>ntro<strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> cual, cada una permanecía autónoma. Lucharoncontra los lidios, aunque en el siglo VI a.C. cayeronbajo el dominio persa, hasta que, con el apoyo <strong>de</strong> Atenasy tras <strong>la</strong>s Guerras Médicas, obtuvieron <strong>la</strong> libertadformal.Lisímaco: Fue uno <strong>de</strong> los generales más <strong>de</strong>stacados <strong>de</strong>Alejandro III <strong>de</strong> Macedonia. Con <strong>la</strong> muerte <strong>de</strong>l conquistador,heredó <strong>la</strong> zona <strong>de</strong> Tracia don<strong>de</strong> fue nombradorey en el 305 a.C. Su reinado duró hasta el año281 a.C. cuando murió en <strong>la</strong> batal<strong>la</strong> <strong>de</strong> Korupedion contraSeleuco y tras <strong>la</strong> cual su reino <strong>de</strong>sapareció.Litra: Moneda y medida <strong>de</strong> peso en Sicilia. En bronceequivalía a 8,8 gr. y en p<strong>la</strong>ta a 0,86 gr., un quinto <strong>de</strong>una dracma ática.Locri Epicefiria: Lokroi Epizephyrioi. Poleis <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> región<strong>de</strong> Bruttium fundada en el 680 a.C., aunque no empezóa acuñar <strong>monedas</strong> hasta mediados <strong>de</strong>l siglo IV a.C.Fue aliada <strong>de</strong> Dionisos <strong>de</strong> Siracusa durante su guerracon <strong>la</strong>s ciuda<strong>de</strong>s itálicas en el 388 a.C. Estuvo bajo <strong>la</strong>influencia romana a partir <strong>de</strong>l 277 a.C. pero posteriormentefue una <strong>de</strong> los baluartes <strong>de</strong> Hanibal durante<strong>la</strong> Segunda Guerra Púnica. Finalmente fue capturadapor Escipión en el 205 a.C.Lucania: Región <strong>de</strong>l sur <strong>de</strong> Italia que <strong>de</strong>limita al nortecon <strong>la</strong>s zonas <strong>de</strong> Campania y Samnio, al este con Apuliaal sur con Bruttium y el golfo <strong>de</strong> Tarento y al oestecon el mar Tirreno.Lu<strong>la</strong>bs: Rama <strong>de</strong> palma que se usaba junto con los ethrogen <strong>la</strong> festividad hebrea <strong>de</strong>l Sukkoth.Lysimacheia: Ciudad fundada por Lisímaco en Tracia entorno al 309 a.C. cerca <strong>de</strong> Kardia, <strong>la</strong> cual acababa <strong>de</strong>ser <strong>de</strong>struída. La nueva poleis se convirtió en <strong>la</strong> resi<strong>de</strong>nciay en <strong>la</strong> ceca europea <strong>de</strong>l rey <strong>de</strong> Tracia.Macedonia: Región situada en <strong>la</strong> parte central-sur <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>penínsu<strong>la</strong> <strong>de</strong> los Balcanes, en el mar Adriático. Hacíafrontera con Tracia al noreste, Tesalia al suroeste,mientras que al sur lindaba con Epiro y el mar Egeo.Sus primeros asentamientos datan <strong>de</strong> época neolítica.Macedonia, reino: Establecido por Perdicas I en torno al650 a.C., no acaparó apenas relevancia hasta el reinado<strong>de</strong> Alejandro I (495-454 a.C.). Durante el reinado<strong>de</strong> Filipo II (359-336 a.C.) comienza un período <strong>de</strong>dinámica expansión y prosperidad, venciendo en el338 a.C. a los griegos y unificando territorios bajo sugobierno. Pero fue con su hijo Alejandro III (336-323a.C.), con quien el reino alcanzó su máxima plenitu<strong>de</strong>xtendiendo sus territorios por Asia hasta el noroeste<strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> India. Tras <strong>la</strong> muerte <strong>de</strong> éste sin nombrar sucesorel reino se disgregó perdiendo todo su esplendor. En el167 a.C. fue <strong>de</strong>rrotado por Emilio Paulo, pero Roma<strong>de</strong>cidió fragmentar<strong>la</strong> en cuatro repúblicas autogobernadas,que pasaron finalmente al control romano enel 146 a.C.Magistrados: Muchos <strong>de</strong> los nombres que aparecen en<strong>la</strong>s <strong>monedas</strong> <strong>griegas</strong> antiguas no se correspon<strong>de</strong>n con<strong>de</strong>ida<strong>de</strong>s, héroes o gobernantes, sino con cargos oficiales<strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>s ciuda<strong>de</strong>s encargados <strong>de</strong> acuñar <strong>la</strong>s <strong>monedas</strong>.Magna Grecia: Nombre dado en <strong>la</strong> Antigüedad a <strong>la</strong>scolonias <strong>griegas</strong> <strong>de</strong>l sur <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> penínsu<strong>la</strong> Itálica.Magnesia: Ciudad <strong>de</strong>l interior <strong>de</strong> Jonia, situada al sureste<strong>de</strong> Éfeso. Fue fundada por los tesalios aunque posteriormente,en tornos al siglo VII a.C. fue recolonizadopor los habitantes <strong>de</strong> Miletos.Mamertinos: Mercenarios <strong>de</strong> origen samnita establecidosen Messina. Su área <strong>de</strong> influencia se sitúa en el piconoreste <strong>de</strong> Sicilia <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> A<strong>la</strong>isa hasta un poco más alnorte <strong>de</strong> Tauromenion en <strong>la</strong> costa y por el interiorhasta Agyrion. Las acuñaciones mamertinas siguen lospatrones púnicos. En el 270 a.C. fueron vencidos yprácticamente aniqui<strong>la</strong>dos por Hierón II <strong>de</strong> Siracusa.Marathos: Poleis situada en el extremo norte <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> región<strong>de</strong> Fenicia, situada en <strong>la</strong> costa frente a <strong>la</strong> is<strong>la</strong> y granrival <strong>de</strong> Arados quien <strong>de</strong>struyó <strong>la</strong> ciudad en el 140 a.C.Massalia: Colonia <strong>de</strong> fundación focea al sur <strong>de</strong> Francia.Actual Marsel<strong>la</strong>.Mauritania: Región situada en <strong>la</strong> zona occi<strong>de</strong>ntal <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>costa norte <strong>de</strong> África que limitaba al este con Numidia(actual Argelia) y llegaba hasta <strong>la</strong>s costas <strong>de</strong>l océanoAtlántico.Medusa: Una <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>s tres hermanas gorgonas y única <strong>de</strong>el<strong>la</strong>s que era mortal. Fue <strong>de</strong>capitada por Perseo y sucabeza entregada a Atenea que <strong>la</strong> incluyó en <strong>la</strong> égida.Melita: Is<strong>la</strong> <strong>de</strong> Malta. Con asentamientos que datan <strong>de</strong>época prehistórica, <strong>la</strong> situación estratégica <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> is<strong>la</strong>favoreció <strong>la</strong>s invasiones y asentamientos <strong>de</strong> otros pueblos.Melqart o Melkarth: Principal <strong>de</strong>idad <strong>de</strong> Tiro y algunas<strong>de</strong> sus colonias. Seguramente estaba re<strong>la</strong>cionado conBa´al, pero los griegos lo equipararon a Heracles. Enel arte fenicio aparecía representado barbado, con ungran tocado en <strong>la</strong> cabeza y con un hacha. Ya en <strong>la</strong>s<strong>monedas</strong> <strong>de</strong> Tiro aparece con los atributos típicos <strong>de</strong>Heracles.Ména<strong>de</strong>: Mujer que junto con los sátiros formaban parte<strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> comitiva <strong>de</strong> Dionisos. También se les l<strong>la</strong>móbacantes.Mesembria, Tracia: Enc<strong>la</strong>ve <strong>de</strong> poca importancia situadoen <strong>la</strong> is<strong>la</strong> <strong>de</strong> Samotracia.200

Importante colonia megarense situada en <strong>la</strong>costa oeste <strong>de</strong>l mar Negro al norte <strong>de</strong> Apollonia Pontika.Mi<strong>la</strong>sa: My<strong>la</strong>sa. Ciudad no griega más importante <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>región <strong>de</strong> Caria situada al oeste <strong>de</strong> StratoNikéia. Seconvirtió en <strong>la</strong> capital <strong>de</strong>l país bajo el reinado <strong>de</strong>l sátrapaHekatomnos (395-377 a.C.). Su sucesor Maussolostras<strong>la</strong>dó <strong>la</strong> capital a Halicarnaso don<strong>de</strong> construyó sutumba que a <strong>la</strong> postre se ha consi<strong>de</strong>rado como una <strong>de</strong><strong>la</strong>s siete maravil<strong>la</strong>s <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> Antigüedad.Mileto: Poleis jonia situada en <strong>la</strong> costa oeste <strong>de</strong> AsiaMenor situada cerca <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> <strong>de</strong>sembocadura <strong>de</strong>l ríoMeandro. Fue <strong>la</strong> más próspera <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> confe<strong>de</strong>raciónjónica, sus habitantes establecieron colonias en elHelesponto, Propónti<strong>de</strong> y en el Ponto Euxino. Cayóbajo dominio persa durante el reinado <strong>de</strong> Ciro II, peroentre el 499 y el 494 a.C. Mileto dirigió <strong>la</strong> revueltajónica contra los persas pero al final Darío I <strong>de</strong>rrotó yarrasó <strong>la</strong> ciudad.Mina: Medida <strong>de</strong> peso, aparentemente <strong>de</strong> origen babiloniocuyo nombre era manah, escrito por los griegos comomna y mina por los romanos. Como peso babilonio tienesdos versiones; una ligera <strong>de</strong> 500 gr y otra pesada <strong>de</strong>1000 gr <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>s que no tenemos referencias <strong>de</strong> su adopciónpor parte <strong>de</strong> los griegos. De <strong>la</strong>s únicas minas <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>sque tenemos seguridad que fueron utilizadas en Grecia,son <strong>la</strong>s usadas en el Ática y que equivalían a ciendracmas (436,6 gr). En conexión supuestamente con elsistema métrico egineta, encontramos otro peso <strong>de</strong> mercadoequivalente a 138 dracmas (602 gr).Misia: Región <strong>de</strong> Asia Menor situada en lo que actualmentees el noroeste <strong>de</strong> Turquía, limitaba al norte por<strong>la</strong> propónti<strong>de</strong>, al este por Bitinia y Frigia, al sur porLidia y al oeste por el mar Egeo. Durante el siglo VIa.C. estuvo bajo el control <strong>de</strong> Lidia, tras <strong>la</strong>s conquistas<strong>de</strong> Darío I pasó a formar parte como satrapía <strong>de</strong>l imperiopersa, hasta <strong>la</strong> llegada <strong>de</strong> Alejandro Magno.Misterios <strong>de</strong> Eleusis: Rituales sagrados <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>s fiestas religiosascelebrados en <strong>la</strong> antigua Grecia. Al igual que<strong>la</strong>s Eleusinias, una fiesta bienal en honor <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>s divinida<strong>de</strong>s<strong>griegas</strong> Deméter y Perséfone. Su nombre proce<strong>de</strong><strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> ciudad <strong>de</strong> Eleusis, en Ática, cerca <strong>de</strong> Atenas.Mucho antes <strong>de</strong> que Atenas alcanzara su esplendor, elpueblo <strong>de</strong> Eleusis celebraba los misterios, que mástar<strong>de</strong> adoptó Atenas como fiesta oficial. Se conservó elsacerdocio original. La parte más importante <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> fiesta,<strong>la</strong> iniciación <strong>de</strong> los participantes, tenía lugar todoslos años, durante siglos, en el Telesterion, en Eleusis.Esta iniciación era el momento culminante <strong>de</strong> una serie<strong>de</strong> rituales que comenzaban en los primeros días <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>primavera, con <strong>la</strong> celebración <strong>de</strong> los misterios menores,en Āgra, cerca <strong>de</strong> Atenas. En esa época, los mystoe,participantes en <strong>la</strong>s cuatro primeras etapas en <strong>la</strong> reve<strong>la</strong>ción<strong>de</strong> los misterios, contaban <strong>la</strong> leyenda <strong>de</strong> Demétery Perséfone, l<strong>la</strong>mada Koré. Los ritos <strong>de</strong> purificacióntambién formaban parte <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> ceremonia <strong>de</strong> losmisterios menores. Las ceremonias <strong>de</strong>l otoño, l<strong>la</strong>madaslos gran<strong>de</strong>s misterios, comenzaban con el tras<strong>la</strong>do <strong>de</strong>los objetos sagrados <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> Eleusis a Atenas por losjóvenes conocidos como efebi. Las ceremonias incluíanun discurso <strong>de</strong>l sacerdote a los candidatos, <strong>la</strong> purificaciónen el mar, un rito <strong>de</strong> sacrificio, y una gran procesión<strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> Atenas hasta Eleusis, don<strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> iniciación teníalugar en ceremonias secretas. Este culto pasó <strong>de</strong> Greciaa Roma y duró el periodo que engloba los reinadostranscurridos <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> Adriano hasta Teodosio, quien loabolió en el 381 d.C., or<strong>de</strong>nando <strong>la</strong> c<strong>la</strong>usura <strong>de</strong>l santuario<strong>de</strong> Eleusis. Es probable que se celebraran hastafinales <strong>de</strong>l siglo IV d.C., cuando A<strong>la</strong>rico I, rey <strong>de</strong> losvisigodos, <strong>de</strong>struyó Eleusis. En el emp<strong>la</strong>zamiento <strong>de</strong>Eleusis, los arqueólogos actuales han encontrado restos<strong>de</strong>l Telesterion y otros edificios sagrados.Mitilene: Antigua colonia eolia y posterior capital <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>is<strong>la</strong> <strong>de</strong> Lesbos. Tras <strong>la</strong>s Guerras Médicas formó parte<strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> Liga <strong>de</strong> Delos. Luchó junto a Mitrídates VI, rey<strong>de</strong>l Ponto en su guerra contra Roma (88 a.C.).Mitrídates VI: El más famoso <strong>de</strong> los reyes <strong>de</strong>l Ponto, sudinastía <strong>de</strong>cía <strong>de</strong>scen<strong>de</strong>r <strong>de</strong> los antiguos reyes <strong>de</strong> Irán,en particu<strong>la</strong>r <strong>de</strong> Darío el Gran<strong>de</strong>, se enfrentó a Romaaunque acabó siendo <strong>de</strong>rrotado.Moesia: Actual Servia y noroeste <strong>de</strong> Bulgaria, sus habitanteseran <strong>de</strong> origen tracio. Esta zona a su vez apareceen los textos dividida en Moesia Inferior y Superior.Morgantina: Ciudad siciliana <strong>de</strong> origen siceliota l<strong>la</strong>madaMurgentia y que estaba situada en el centro-este <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>is<strong>la</strong>. Hay varias hipótesis que re<strong>la</strong>cionan esta ciudadcon <strong>la</strong>s <strong>monedas</strong> encontradas en Sicilia con <strong>la</strong> leyenda“HISPANORVM” 61 . Pero el <strong>de</strong>bate surge cuando tratan<strong>de</strong> fechar<strong>la</strong>s, algunos autores como Aloiss Heiss,Holm, Hilly y Grueber ligan estas emisiones a <strong>la</strong>s <strong>de</strong>Sexto Pompeyo (67-35 a.C.), Willers <strong>la</strong>s data en tornoal año 100 a.C. y K. Erim 62 <strong>la</strong>s sitúa a finales <strong>de</strong>l sigloIII a.C. y principios <strong>de</strong>l siglo II a.C., cuando Marceloasediaba Siracusa con tropas ibéricas. (Ver Cat. nº. 96,97 y 98).Motya: Puerto púnico más importante <strong>de</strong> Sicilia, estabasituado en una pequeña isleta frente a <strong>la</strong> costa oeste <strong>de</strong>ésta.
