THE <strong>CIA</strong> AGAINST LATIN AMERICAUnfortunately, as it happens in <strong>Ecuador</strong> and other latitudes, the realhistory of the <strong>CIA</strong> activities is not properly known by the new generationsor the general populace. Amongst ourselves, for example, savefor revolutionary leftwing sectors, there are few who posses thoroughinformation about the matter, while rightwing and its media servants tryto deflect the public eye by labeling as paranoia any complaint about theconspiratorial and coup dealings of the agency and its multiple agentsand local collaborators. It’s enough seeing the rage of certain “independent”mediums when President Rafael Correa cast out, first, two USdiplomats linked to the <strong>CIA</strong>, and then the ambassador Heather Hodgesherself, provoking the fury of the empire and the belligerent legion thatserves in our midst. From there it is best to return to Philip Agee, whotells us lecturing details during this interview about his actions and experiencesin <strong>Ecuador</strong> during the three years he operated amongst us.It is true that half a century has passed since that time and many of theold agents have died or gone silent but, at the edge of their identity andtheir chaos, still live the methods used by the <strong>CIA</strong> both to recruit spies aswell as infiltrate anywhere and carry out operations of sabotage, politicalmisinformation and government destabilizing. Now with greater motivationthan before, because if then the Yankees strived to isolate Cuba andstop the revolutionary danger derived from its example, today <strong>Ecuador</strong>and <strong>La</strong>tin <strong>America</strong> in general march on the declared road of the SecondIndependence, with revolutionary or progressive and nationalist governmentson several fronts possibly being, happily, a road with no return.This is why we are encouraged by the interview held in 1975 with PhilipAgee in England. We later met up with him again in Paris, Nicaraguaand Cuba, where he spent his last years, always contributing to the liber-15
