De manera que, como queda bien claro en ellibro, habíamos tenido la vida política del país altamente penetrado.¿El objetivo era solo la izquierda, o el objetivo era el país frente ala izquierda?El objetivo era lograr nuestras metas en cada país de la América <strong>La</strong>tina,y en el caso de <strong>Ecuador</strong> eso fue, como dije: Primero, aislar la revolucióncubana, esto quiere decir, que estuvimos obrando para el rompimientode relaciones diplomáticas y comerciales con Cuba por todoslos países de América <strong>La</strong>tina. Y cuando llegue allá, Velasco Ibarra habíasido reelegido, creo que por cuatro veces o algo así, y él no quiso rompercon Cuba, ni tampoco sus más importantes Ministros, ni tampocoArosemena, cuando él sucedió a Velasco, así que tuvimos que lucharcontinuamente, intentando causar las provocaciones que resultaría enun rompimiento y a través de la propaganda, sobre todo la acción política,a través de estos partidos políticos, y por fin lo conseguimos, no meacuerdo exactamente, quizás marzo del 62 o por ahí, cuando el gobiernode Arosemena…¡Subió al poder!...No, ya estaba en el poder por varios meses, pero hubo una revueltaen Cuenca, creo, por los militares, en ese sector, y Cuenca fue muy importanteen aquel tiempo en cuanto a los servicios militares.83
Ahora, ¿ustedes logran dividir, debilitar, casi desaparecer al partidocomunista ecuatoriano, lo logran fragmentar ustedes, al punto casi deanularlo?Yo no creo que eso pasó en el tiempo en que yo estuve allá. Comoen todo el <strong>Ecuador</strong>, hay divisiones entre la Sierra y la Costa, y el partidoestuvo dividido más o menos así: el Comité Provincial de Pichincha fuecasi como un Comité Central de la Sierra y en la Costa estuvo la Direcciónbajo Pedro Saad, en aquellos años.¿Usted logra entonces penetrar más al de la Sierra, al de Pichincha,al de Rafael Echeverría Flores?Yo no me acuerdo muy bien ahora, hace tantos años que no reviso esto,pero el partido en ambos lugares, o sea, tanto en la Costa como en la Sierra,fue penetrado. Tuvimos nosotros agentes que estaban militando en elpartido y también tuvimos operaciones técnicas: de escuche, de fotografía,etc. De manera que nosotros sabíamos, conocimos bastante bien, lo queestaba pasando dentro del partido, pero iba a decir, que llevamos a cabocontinuamente estudios sobre la posibilidad de un brote de violencia, esdecir, las Fuerzas Especiales del Ejército de Estados Unidos, basados enPanamá, harían visitas regulares a <strong>Ecuador</strong> y a Perú y a Bolivia etc., estudiandotambién el problema, o sea, el nivel de amenaza que representabala izquierda, tanto por la vía electoral, como por la lucha armada.Tras su acción, tras lo que ustedes hacen, ¿creen que lograron debilitara la izquierda ecuatoriana?Yo creo que hasta cierto punto sí, en aquellos momentos, porquehubo mucha represión después de que la Junta Militar entró en el poder,eso sería como en julio del 63 y muchos, varios de los dirigentes fueronexiliados, o sea tuvieron que ir al exterior, y esa represión sí creo que84
