THE CIA AGAINST LATIN AMERICAYes. We saw the situation in such-and-such country, even Ecuador, among enemies and friends, allies and rivals. And from the Socialist Partyto the left were labeled as enemies of our interests, US interests. Fromthe Social Democrat Party, founded by Naranjo (Manuel Naranjo Toro) –this party was our creation– and from that Party to the right, even ARNE,that was semi-fascist, a quasi-fascist organization, all those were the politicalforces that we supported and used in our campaigns to go againstthe left. The operations aimed to penetrate power institutions, that isto say, political parties, syndicates, governments themselves; youth, student, and women organizations, religious communities, a very importantone; and we could collocate our materials through journalists, who gotpaid by us to publish our materials, as if were their own.Or the Party’s, or from the political front that showed up, supposedly…Yes, we achieved the formation of some fronts: the anticommunistfront, I remember that was one, and I don’t remember, it depended onthe current situation. Now, the question is: Why did Ecuadorians sell themselves so easilyto turn into CIA agents or informants?Well, some agreed to work with us and others didn’t. I rememberhaving tried to recruit certain people that rejected me.And those who accepted, why did they accept?MoneyWas money the main reason?I think that, in most cases, the reason was money. In some others alsowas disappointment about the Party. There were various reasons, but, underneath all that, always was economical reason.79
