How did the <strong>CIA</strong> treat this kind of persons who were betraying theircountry and their homeland? Weren’t they treated as traitors?It depended on who the person was. For example: there were politicianswho didn’t considered their collaboration with us as treason, theyhad the idea that they were supporting the preservation of the system.These were the traditional parties. It was a very natural thing, we hadrelations, for example with the Interior Minister or the Interior DeputySecretary (Manuel Córdoba Galarza), any kind of government officials,military men also, policemen, and those were permanent contacts.Have the moral factor, about they were hurting a Nation and thatyou, as a part of <strong>CIA</strong>, were contributing to that damage, ever cameinto debate?Well, not. Because they identified with us and with US interests. So,from their perspective, that was not treason to <strong>Ecuador</strong> at all. On theother hand, there were spies in the leftist party, for example, that werebetraying the Party indeed, and we must distinguish between what acertain person was doing and what another did, but it was not difficult toget the person identified with us.About the easiest infiltrations, about the ones that most easily succumbedto pressure: Were those only political sectors? Were thoseonly from left sectors or from political right sectors and other kinds ofgroups in <strong>Ecuador</strong>?Well, as you may have read in my book, they were from all sectors,<strong>especial</strong>ly from traditional civil society. Among youth and students,for example, the traditional political parties, these were operations inthe civil society, and it’s very interesting to know that this was the <strong>CIA</strong>’soperating field, through under covered activities up to 1985, roughly80
