THE <strong>CIA</strong> AGAINST LATIN AMERICADid you manage to reach an ideological process into them, particularlyin the case of <strong>Ecuador</strong>, with the military?Well, I think that immediately, when the strike against Arosemena occurred.I don’t remember the names of the four military men now.Gándara, Freire, Castro Jijón and another one…Well, Gándara (Gen. Marcos Gándara Enríquez, member of the MilitaryBoard) which we contacted. We may have had contact with Gándarabefore the strike, but he was the member of the Military Broad who oftentreated issues.How do you consider the Armed Forces, in regard to that momentwhen you acted? Were the <strong>Ecuador</strong>ian Armed Forces progressist orreactionist? Were they “pro-gorilistas” or in an open and democraticattitude? How the <strong>Ecuador</strong>ian Armed Forces considered them?Well, in that time, I don’t remember they were democratic, becausethey established an almost fascist dictatorship, and began immediatelyto repress the left, people who had committed no crime, who have justmilitated occasionally in some revolutionary organization.But if this was propitiated by the <strong>CIA</strong> to attack them, obviouslythey were going to respond, they were going to act this way, and itstands to reason.Yes, it was logical. And we thought in that time that repression and weakeningthe left were very important, and we kept the attempts to isolate therevolution and its influence in <strong>La</strong>tin <strong>America</strong>. The Cuban Revolution was veryrelevant in <strong>Ecuador</strong> at that time, and also in the rest of <strong>La</strong>tin <strong>America</strong>. We triedto impede <strong>Ecuador</strong>ian trips to Cuba to become acquainted with revolutionor anything, and accomplished the rupture of every <strong>La</strong>tin <strong>America</strong>n Countrywith Cuba, except Mexico.
