THE CIA AGAINST LATIN AMERICAMeeting you at this reunion in Managua, makes me feel, asidefrom new political impulses, a profound emotive feeling, because,no doubt, of my previous work, which directly or indirectly, caused so many of you so much pain and suffering. Over there sits, for example, Jaime Galarza Zavala, leader of the Unión Revolucionariade Juventudes Ecuatorianas (URJE) during the time in which I arrivedto Ecuador in 1960. Thanks to many operations that we carried outagainst him, he spent years and years in jail, under the worst conditionsand more than once. That was largely thanks to CIA operations. Overthere is Ricardo Gadea, a Peruvian fighter, who also spent many years injail after failing the revolutionary movement that belonged to the MIR,thanks to a penetration of that movement that I recruited at a time inGuayaquil. Over there is also Pírez Pedro Martinez, who was the headof the Cuban mission in Quito, Ecuador, when I arrived and took chargeof many operations we raised over all the Cuban missions in Ecuadorat the time. Thanks in large part to these operations, we expelled theentire mission. Also there is a Dominican fighter who also was jailed andwas treated in such a way that he almost died at the hands of Dominicanservices, supported, trained and financed by the CIA. And I could notoverlook Rafael Cancel Miranda, Puerto Rican hero and political prisonerin the United States itself for 25 years. There is also Sampairo, Uruguayanartist who spent nine years in prison in Uruguay, probably the worst inall of Latin America, thanks to CIA operations in which I participated inthe 60s, which always pointed to the beat of the military in that country, executed in 1963. And, of course, here with us is President Juan Bosch, overthrown in a coup backed by the CIA and then prevented their return53
