An Executive degree provides preconditions for
management and leadership tasks, advanced
knowledge and skills, intercultural competence and
the ability to solve different problems – factors that
prepare employees for an international business
environment and can enhance the career prospects
tremendously.
The University of St. Gallen offers a wide range of
executive education programs which equips
managers with skills that are of great benefit to a
successful career. Participants learn new ways of
boosting their know-how and to apply their newly
acquired skills right away. They acquire a new set of
skills that will let them make the right decision at
the right time. In addition, they build up
intercultural competencies and international
negotiation skills. On top of that, they can widely
expand their professional and personal network of
peers, faculty and alumni. The HSG Alumni
Association has more than 20,000 members and is
one of the most influential networks in business
worldwide.
POTENTIAL OF
SWISS EDUCATION
FROM INSIGHT TO IMPACT: TOMORROW´S
CHALLENGES FOR PROFESSIONALS
One of those programs, the Executive Master of
European and International Business Law
“E.M.B.L.-HSG” just celebrated its 20th anniversary.
This program puts its focus on the legal education
of managers but also lawyers and engineers. The
focus lays on practice oriented education which can
be directly applied to the job.
Globalization and regionalization of the economy
provoke frequent cross-border transactions,
requiring skills in European and international
business law from both lawyers and non-lawyers.
Employees need to know about the challenges, the
juridification of the economy poses. Managers
need to assess the risks and to instruct counsel and
lawyers. But they remain responsible for their
actions. Therefore, managers need to have at least
a general knowledge of legal problems which may
arise in an international company.
The M.B.L. is taught in the lingua franca of
globalization, English. It functions as a flying
classroom and disposes of a global faculty which
consists of European, American, Chinese and
Japanese professors, lawyers, in-house counsel,
judges, politicians, officials and economists from
business and academia. The program starts in St.
Gallen and then makes a trip around the world with
the destinations Zurich (Finance), Frankfurt (M&A),
Luxembourg (Procedure), Brussels (Competition
Law), Geneva (Law, Lobbying & Public Affairs), New
York (International Taxation), Cambridge, MA
(Negotiation), Shanghai (Business and Law in
China), Tokyo (Business and Law in Japan) and
Austin, TX (IT and Energy Law). Beside top
universities like NYU, Harvard, University of Texas,
Fudan (China) and Waseda (Japan), cooperation
partners include significant law firms such as
Freshfields, Norton Rose Fulbright and White &
Case.
Studying on the spot not only imparts knowledge in
the respective fields, but also familiarizes
candidates with the corresponding genius loci. The
M.B.L. was one of the first post-graduate programs
in Europe which was based on the dichotomy of
intramural (e.g. lecture hall) and extramural (i.e.
virtual) studies. The lessons are interactive, and
educational objectives are the transfer of
knowledge, skills and social competence. A key
feature of the program is the mix of lawyers and
non-lawyers, which aims at guaranteeing a program
as close to daily practice as possible. Candidates
complete their studies alongside career and family.
Thanks to the flexible structure (five basic and five
optional modules), the M.B.L. may easily be
combined with a challenging professional activity.
Due to the balanced mix of academic and practical
knowledge, candidates can apply their new
know-how directly in their daily work. This creates
an immediate added value, also for the employer.
After successful completion of the program,
candidates are awarded the title of “Executive
Master of European and International Business Law
E.M.B.L.-HSG”. They profit from the excellent
quality of the University of St. Gallen and from the
reputation that HSG graduates enjoy in the
marketplace. The University of St.Gallen is
accredited by the European Quality Improvement
System (EQUIS) and the American Association to
Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
