romover la competitividad
y ofrecer apoyo a los pequeños,
medianos y grandes
pudieran estarlo haciendo. Mi objetivo
será lograr que el Estado y
el sector privado se comprometan
en hacer de las exportaciones una
prioridad nacional. De esta manera,
se estaría contribuyendo con el
desarrollo del país en todos los niveles
por medio de la creación de
riqueza. Cuando hablo de una estrategia
nacional de exportación,
no me refiero a seguir vendiendo
lo mismo, sino también a innovar
y promover la competitividad.
¿Cuáles han sido las iniciativas más
punteras impulsadas por Adoexpo?
A través de los años hemos
sido un defensor de los intereses
del sector exportador. A nivel de
iniciativas, constantemente trabajamos
con temas de capacitación,
asistencia a pequeñas y medianas
empresas, desarrollo de planes de
exportación y misiones comerciales.
En estos momentos trabajamos
una misión comercial en islas
del Caribe, en la que se han involucrado
entidades como el CEI-
RD y Caribbean Export.
Con el Banco Popular hemos
implementado la plataforma
ProExporta Popular. En los últimos
dos años se han otorgado
préstamos a más de 300 empresas,
de las cuales más de 200 son pequeñas
y medianas compañías, a
las cuales también capacitamos.
Con el Banco de Reservas también
hemos logrado acuerdos de
asistencia técnica a favor de los
exportadores.
¿Cómo ha evolucionado la cantidad
de miembros asociados a Adoexpo?
Sobrepasamos los 300 miembros,
de todos los niveles y sectores,
desde asociaciones, coopera-
tivas, compañías agroindustriales,
agrícolas, industriales y prestadoras
de servicios. Tenemos industrias
manufactureras y de zonas
francas, lo que refleja una diversidad
bastante amplia de exportadores,
y eso significa que velamos
por todo el sector exportador.
¿Cuáles nuevos mercados y
productos el país podría aprovechar?
Según el mercado, la oportunidad
de negocio puede variar.
La mayoría de las exportaciones
dominicanas se dirigen a Estados
Unidos, Europa y Haití. Nuestra
visión es que debemos diversificar,
y no depender de los mercados
tradicionales. Tenemos una
serie de destinos donde podemos
hacer negocios y diversificar
nuestro riesgo, pero debemos ser
proactivos en la apertura de estos
nuevos mercados. Centroamérica
posee un gran potencial, pues hemos
identificado oportunidades
en materia de servicio logístico
y transporte marítimo a tarifas
competitivas.
potenciales exportadores
dominicanos?
El mejor momento para exportar
es ahora. Existen ventanas de
oportunidades actualmente que
debemos de aprovechar con el fin
de asegurar nuestra posición en
mercados determinados. Cuando
exportamos no competimos con
una empresa o con un mercado,
sino con el mundo. Por lo tanto,
debemos estar dispuestos a ser
creativos, proactivos y a manejarnos
con los mayores estándares.
THE BEST TIME TO
EXPORT IS NOW
The Dominican Association of
Exporters (Adoexpo) maintains a
dynamic role by making available a
variety of tools and facilities to position
the sector’s products abroad.
The cornerstone of the Dominican Association
of Exporters (ADOEXPO), directed
by Álvaro Sousa, is to promote
competitiveness and provide support
for small, medium and large businesses.
What plans does ADOEXPO have for
exporters?
The most important objective is to
develop and implement a national export
strategy. In the Dominican Republic there
are many companies that could be exporting
more and others that could be doing it.
My goal will be to make the Government
and the private sector commit to making
exports a national priority. This will contribute
to the development of the country
at all levels through the creation of wealth.
When I speak of a national export strategy,
I do not only mean to keep selling the
same things, but also to innovate and promote
competitiveness.
What have been the most successful
initiatives driven by ADOEXPO?
Throughout the years we have been
a defender of the interests of the
exports sector. As for initiatives, we are
constantly working with training topics,
assistance to small and medium enterprises,
development of export plans and
trade missions. We are currently working
on a trade mission to the Caribbean
islands, which has involved entities such
as the CEI-RD and Caribbean Export.
Along with Banco Popular we have implemented
the “Proexporta” platform. In
the last two years, it has granted loans
to more than 300 companies, of which
more than 200 are small and medium
companies, which we also train. With
the Banco de Reservas we have also
made agreements for technical assistance
to exporters.
How has the number of members
associated with ADOEXPO evolved?
We have over 300 members from
all levels and sectors, from associations,
cooperatives, agribusiness, agricultural,
to industrial and service provider companies.
We have manufacturing industries
and free zones, reflecting a fairly wide
range of exporters, and that means that
we ensure the entire exporting sector.
What new markets and products
could the country take advantage of?
Depending on the market, the business
opportunity may vary. Most of the Dominican
exports go to the United States, Europe
and Haiti. Our vision is to diversify, and not
rely on traditional markets. For example,
following the problem that avocados went
through with the ban imposed by the United
States, traders started exporting this
product to Central America and the Caribbean
islands. That problem ended up being
an opportunity to find new markets.
We have a number of destinations
where we can do business and diversify
our risk, but we must be proactive in the
delevopment of these new markets. Central
America has great potential, as we
have identified opportunities in logistics
and shipping service at competitive rates.
In addition, we have a Central America
free trade agreement, as well as with some
Caribbean islands through CARICOM, and
this gives us access to duty-free countries
for a great variety of Dominican products.
What message would you give to potential
Dominican exporters?
The best time to export is now. There
are windows of opportunities that we
currently take advantage of in order to
secure our position in certain markets.
When we export we do not compete
with a company or a market, but with
the world. Therefore, we must be willing
to be creative, proactive and to manage
with the highest standards.
