“The beauty segment generates more than 190 thousand
fue creado el Clúster Dominicano
de Productos de Belleza, como una
iniciativa de la Asociación de Industrias
de la República Dominicana
(AIRD), con el apoyo del Consejo
Nacional de Competitividad
(CNC) y el Banco Interamericano
de Desarrollo (BID).
El Clúster es dirigido por Amable
Padilla. El objetivo es crear un
espacio de acompañamiento a los
diferentes actores del sector y fomentar
la calidad de los productos
cosméticos nacionales.
El Clúster agrupa 65 empresas
fabricantes de productos de belleza,
cosméticos y cuidado personal.
“El segmento genera más de
190 mil empleos directos e indirectos
y ha mostrado un crecimiento
de 5 % anual, aproximadamente.
Durante los años 2014 y 2015, las
exportaciones del sector ascendieron
a unos 60 millones de dólares.
Los principales destinos de estas
exportaciones son Estados Unidos,
Haití, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Panamá
y las Antillas”, comenta Padilla.
COSMETICS AND MEDICAL
PRODUCTS, TWO SEGMENTS
ON THE RISE
These export sectors achieved great
projection and claim their place
in the international markets for
their quality.
The medical device industry in the
Dominican Republic is part of the top
ten in world rankings, occupying the
fifth position among the main exporters
of medical devices to the United
States and the ninth position in the
ranking of exporters to Canada during
2015. Much of this position in world
rankings is due to competitive industry
costs, availability of skilled labor and
the country’s efficient infrastructure
logistics.
Medical products are mostly manufactured
through the free zone regime,
which by 2014 had registered a
total of 28 companies dedicated exclusively
to the production of medical
devices such as equipment for blood
transfusion, surgical disposable products,
orthopedics, surgical sutures,
and devices for monitoring blood
pressure, among other items for medical
and pharmaceutical use.
According to the latest data published
by the National Free Zones
Council (CNZFE), the activities of
this industry represented 4.6% of all
industrial activity in the Free Trade
Zones in 2014, and are generating
more than 7% of the jobs of that regime,
resulting in a workforce of more
than 19,300 Dominicans developing
such products.
All these factors directly contribute
to the increase of the exports,
highlighting that in the 2012-2014 period
exports have been of approximately
US$3,725.30 million.
The global demand for medical
products is clear, and Dominican Republic
has an accumulated investment
of over US$840 million in companies in
this industry, which represents 22.16 %
of the total investments in free zones.
THE BUSINESS OF BEAUTY
In the area of cosmetics and beauty,
the Dominican Republic has quality
seals that ensure the use of best practices
in the development of premium
products, sold mainly in the Caribbean
islands, where Dominican cosmetics
have strong presence.
According to preliminary statistics
from the Export and Investment Center
of the Dominican Republic (CEI-
RD), in 2015 approximately US$93.27
millions were exported in perfumery,
cosmetics, and toiletries.
Diverse items were exported,
such as makeup, hair products, deodorants,
toilet waters, sun block and
sunscreens, fragrances and flavor enhancers
for cosmetics and a variety
of essential oils. The Dominican government
provides support to the sector
through advisory and monitoring
services by organisms such as CEI-RD,
who carried out training for businesses
on issues of financial management,
project management, best practices
and international marketing.
EXPERT OPINION
Due to the great potential presented
by the cosmetic industry, the Dominican
Beauty Product Cluster was
created as an initiative of the Dominican
Industrial Association (AIRD), with
the support of the National Competitiveness
Council (CNC) and the Inter-
American Development Bank (IDB).
The Cluster is directed by Amable
Padilla. The goal is to create a space of
accompaniment for the various players
in the sector, and together promote the
quality of national cosmetic products.
The cluster brings together 65
manufacturers of beauty products,
cosmetics and personal care.
The sector generates more than
190 thousand direct and indirect jobs
and has shown an annual growth of
approximately 5%. Between the years
2014 and 2015, the sector’s exports
amounted to about 60 million dollars.
The main recipients of these exports
are the United States, Haiti, Puerto
Rico, Cuba, Panama and the West Indies”,
says Padilla.
