E The topic of “acoustic space and its dramatic
effect” may have been adequately researched by
everyone from le corbusier to xenakis, but for the
architects of UNStudio it nevertheless still holds a
vast amount of fascination and influences, as
shown by the newly built centre for music and musical
theatre at the University of music and performing
arts in Graz (mUmUTH for short). for example,
the architecture of the centre, in which
students not only experience artistic education at
the highest level, but can also test the “emergency”
of their future professional life with public
appearances under professional conditions,
should express that it is a place where music lives.
This was achieved on the one hand with a convertible
stage that allows all sizes of event to be held,
from jazz club to orchestra concert. a clear signal
in this direction is also sent by the “Twist”: a loadbearing
spiral element that links the public space
of the foyer with the music rooms above, thereby
artistically welding the various levels of the building
with each other. everything revolves around
this massive concrete construction, including the
lighting: The centrality is reinforced by the interplay
between linear and round luminaires and is
additionally illuminated through a roof window with
dark wooden slats, which makes the spiral rotation
appear like a fan. While the façade of mUmUTH
appears somewhat plain and withdrawn during the
day, this closeness slowly lifts as darkness falls,
with mUmUTH becoming increasingly transparent
and offering glimpses of its internal life: The geometries
of the Twist and the visitors become visible
and stand in contrast with the patterns on the
façade and indoors captured in the muted tones of
stage make-up.

EsP el tema “el espacio acústico y su influencia
dramática” si bien ha sido suficientemente explorado
por figuras desde le corbusier hasta
xenakis, sin embargo para los arquitectos de
UNStudio, así como para el nuevo hogar construido
para la música y las obras musicales de
la Universidad de artes de Graz (en resumen:
mUmUTH), encierra un gran potencial y levanta
todavía gran fascinación. así pues la casa, donde
actualmente los estudiantes no solo adquieren
formación artística del más alto nivel, sino que
también mediante actuaciones públicas y según
condiciones profesionales pueden comprobar una
futura vida profesional, en el “peor de los casos”,
debería destacar también por la arquitectura entre
la que vive su música. esta meta se alcanza
gracias a unos escenarios móviles, que admiten
desde un conjunto de Jazz hasta un concierto de
orquesta según la necesidad del evento organizado.
en este sentido también envía una clara señal
el “Twist”: Un elemento en espiral de soporte
que une el espacio abierto del vestíbulo con las
salas de música que quedan encima y que suelda
de forma ingeniosa los distintos niveles del edificio.
Todo gira en torno a esta gran construcción
de hormigón, también la iluminación: la interacción
entre las luces lineales y redondas refuerza
la centralidad y el espacio se ilumina, además,
mediante un tragaluz con láminas de madera oscura,
de forma que este “twist” en espiral parece
un abanico. mientras durante el día la fachada del
mUmUTH parece bastante sencilla y totalmente
encerrada en sí misma, pone de relieve esta unidad
cuando el crepúsculo aparece lentamente, y
el mUmUTH comienza a revelar esa transparencia
y ofrece una vista de su vida interior: la geometría
del “Twist” y los visitantes son visibles y contrastan
con los tonos apagados del maquillaje de
escenario tanto de la fachada como del interior.
