From
low To
HIGH
E it has become the catchphrase – and hence for many the taboo phrase –
of the year as it draws to a close: the global economic crisis. of course,
nobody can escape the current situation. and hardly a single company can
deny the varying levels of turbulence associated with the present state of
affairs .
on the other hand, though, did the crisis not emanate from an unusually high
level of success just a short while before? and weren’t all of us able to rejoice
in exceptional years of business activity just a short while before? instead of
drifting off into unnecessary pessimism about the crisis, one thing must
therefore be stated very clearly: it is in the nature of any growth for it to also
take a break sometimes. Those of us who see this break not as inactivity, but
only as a much-needed moment to catch one’s breath and as a challenge to
develop new ideas for a new, conscious and responsible era of success, are
ideally equipped for the future.
at xal, we were always far from translating “crisis” with terms such as
“catastrophe ”. Rather, quite simply, we see it as a necessary period of
change, which requires the power to take decisions more than ever before.
and our decision is clear: to build uncompromisingly on high performance
and on convincing new ideas and to look forward to a time of new success.
above all, the crisis marks the beginning of a new upswing, after a phase of
downturn. We are noticing this not only in the extremely pleasing state of our
order book, but above all in the mood that is now clearly making itself felt all
around – at our partners, customers and friends across the world. it is
advancing and more evident day by day. We would therefore like to take this
occasion to say something very simple: before reaching the peak of any
success , you sometimes have to wander across a valley as well.
¿Y no podíamos
mountains are decidedly lacking in the flatlands of northern Germany.
That’s why Hamburg should now feel slightly closer to the alps – with an
honest-to-goodness alpine meadow on an island in the middle of Hamburg
harbour! The aim of the project by copenhagen architects BiG is to create a
place of magical beauty and a piece of alpine atmosphere – the most realistic
alpine meadow possible, with trees and a small stream as well as a carpet
of soft, green, flower-drenched grass. However, the alpine meadow is
also intended as a place of communication: electrical connections and
WlaN internet access are hidden in the grass so that people can take their
work, laptop or a reading lamp with them into the greenery. The 300 m² room
beneath the alpine meadow, whose character is determined by the statics of
the supporting structure, permits a wide range of uses. as a place protected
from the weather, the room offers space for dining, cinema, presentations,
exhibitions, parties, etc.: a flexible event space that is as extraordinary as it
is surprising. in collaboration with the Berlin artists of Realities United, the
alpine meadow is to be given a lighting system designed to bathe the underworld
of the meadow in spectacular, artificial lighting moods, while the
three-dimensional interior lattice of the supporting framework casts mysterious
silhouettes. at night, it should be clear from the banks of the river that
something very special is afoot here in Hamburg’s first alpine landscape!
a partes iguales.

E a few years ago, top US architect Jordan
mozer converted a previously drab industrial building
in St. pauli into Hamburg’s best hotspot on the
scene: resurrected to a new, glamorous life as the
east Hotel, the former iron foundry that lies parallel
to the Reeperbahn leaves no wish unfulfilled for the
most sophisticated of partygoers. The extraordinary
synthesis of design hotel, restaurant jewel and
nightlife temple now impresses with its recent, brilliant
extension, Upper east. The new club was intended
to become a multimedia event hall and this
has actually been the case for designer florian
Wieder (known as far afield as Hollywood and who
also marks the appearance of the annual mTV europe
music awards) and his design colleague, light
artist Jerry appelt. on a floor space of 350 m², the
design duo has created an exciting and convertible
event location that offers about 500 people plenty
of space to dance, socialise and sip champagne
between the thirty-five metre-long bar, around 150
m² of leD video walls and hundreds of leD strip
lamps. of course, no two events are the same
here, because the leD technology blended with
the architecture makes the location visually variable
to a high degree and therefore already represents
the face of tomorrow’s luxury club today. at
the same time, entry to the club is as exclusive as
the ambience itself: access is granted only to people
who hold one of the rare member cards.
E miss Geschick & lady lapsus is a Hamburg design studio for individual,
off-beat products which was founded in 2006 by olga Bielawska and astrid
Schildkopf. With their cheeky creations, the two designers mainly devote
their attention to the little pitfalls of everyday life, something they do with lots
of humour and a wealth of ideas. Spilt something down the front of a freshly
washed T-shirt again? The fantastic kotztierchen (puke pet) pin gives any
stain a purpose by simply making it part of the outfit. are arguments over
who owns the bed covers causing problems with your partner? The duvet
cover with fifty-percent centreline guarantees that things are shared down
the middle in future. Disgusted by armpit hair? The “Natural mink” T-shirt with
outsized armpit hair in just the right place provides appropriate shock therapy.
“our products are primarily occupied with the thorny mishaps of life, not
by resolving them, but by wanting to make something positive out of them. in
this way, an embarrassing upset suddenly becomes a stylish and communicative
element,” say olga Bielawska and astrid Schildkopf about their clever
ideas with high grin factor – which also make the perfect outrageous gift with
lasting ‘wow’ effect.
by Rem Koolhaas/oma (Nl)
E The most spectacular construction project in
Hamburg is currently arising in the form of the
Überseequartier: a round-the-clock, lively, urban
space of about eight hectares in size in a central
position in Hamburg harbour, planned by outstanding
German and international architects and noted
for its unique mix of living, leisure, shopping and
culture. construction work on the building complexes
began in mid-2007; the Überseequartier is
set to open in 2011, with some areas as early as
2009. a special highlight, apart from the hotel with
cruise terminal, is the Hamburg Science center, a
futuristic, jam-packed combination of aquarium,
science theatre, laboratories and offices right on
the water’s edge of Hamburg’s Hafencity (Harbour
city). Star architect Rem Koolhaas has designed
the heart of Hamburg’s Überseequartier as an abstraction
of a gigantic stack of containers with a
floor space of around 275,000 m², a straight reflection
of the real container landscapes that stretch
along the banks of the harbour on the opposite
side of the River elbe. in his design for the Science
center, Koolhaas stacks the container shapes
asymmetrically to arrive at the shape of a circle: a
huge, angular o on the elbe Beach, 70 metres high
and hollow, as a gigantic homage both to Hamburg
harbour and also as a “symbol of the economic vitality
of the Hanseatic city and stage for its interests
in technology and natural sciences,” as Koolhaas
formulates the concept of his design.
arquitectos nacionales e internacionales y caracterizado

E Beaches and beach bars as temporary open-air spaces for city residents
plagued by heat have quite simply become an urban summer hit in recent
years. However, as the style-conscious and relaxed Hamburg scene criticises,
many of the newly created beach clubs have the tendency either to develop
the drab charm of a sandpit overflowing with beer bottles or to turn into
a snotty place in which to have cocktails – little umbrellas included. for some
time now, the “more relaxed” alternative, as it defines itself, has been Strandpauli,
which – as the name rather obviously implies – is the only true beach in
St. pauli and offers a stunningly magnificent view of Hamburg harbour right
from the bar, especially at night. a snow-white sandy beach, recliners and
wooden benches under plaited raffia parasols, the cultivated sound of jazz
from the DJ’s desk and a summery, relaxed programme of events ranging
from sundowner parties to beach barbecues and tango nights let visitors
quickly forget the fact that the perceived average temperature in Hamburg
only rarely climbs above the twenty degree celsius mark even in high summer
and therefore more often tends to feel Nordically cool rather than tropically
humid.
E a jewellery box in the truest sense of the word was created by linz and Vienna-based architecture
company xarchitekten with its design for the sales rooms of a jewellery boutique on Hauptplatz, the
main square in linz: a transformation of the classic, velvet-lined casket into a large, modern, accessible
version, completely lined with velvety soft velours carpet on the floor, walls and even the ceiling. all the
elements of the extraordinary design concept focus on the sensuous, intimate experience of buying jewellery.
The soft, velvety surfaces of the interior thus become not only an attractive stage for presenting
the exclusive, sparkling products, but ultimately also an analogy of the human skin on which the jewellery
is destined to be worn. a sales environment that expresses the perfect coherence between product
and space, and which impresses not through its visual and functional quality, but also through a special,
extra effect: “customers value maximum discretion when buying precious items,” the architects explain
the ingenious acoustic concept of the space, “therefore the challenge was to create ideal acoustic conditions
on just 50 m² of commercial space so that nobody is disturbed by other sales discussions being
had nearby.” The impressive result is an organically curved, soft space, all of whose surfaces are
trimmed with sound-absorbing materials and, as the designers say, “is most comparable in its function
to a sound-absorbing egg”.
E enthusiastic architecture critics, as well as
countless visitors, likened the new armani flagship
the exclusive fifth avenue address in february this
year. The interior design conceived by italian star
architects Doriana and massimiliano fuksas develops
over five floors as a continuous room
wound around a central spiral staircase. like a cyclone,
the organically shaped, complex steel and
plastic construction of the staircase brings dynamism
and movement to the interior and enables an
unending wealth of spatial perspectives that appear
entirely different, depending on where one
stands. all the spatial elements of the shop, such
as the presentation and sales counters, as well as
the seating and fitting rooms, are orientated in
of a flowing, continuous movement of the
avant-garde space, which was designed in deliberate
contrast to the classically geometrical
façade of the building from the era of the “international
Style” of the 1950s. With the New York armani
completed a trilogy of shop concepts for armani,
following the two equally sensational stores in
Hong Kong and in Tokyo’s Ginza Tower.
E a life without text markers is almost unimaginable, not only for paper tigers
and office stallions. Stabilo, the international company that gave us writers
inspiration and is also responsible for so many other inventions from the
colourful empire of pens, is now making itself a bit more indispensable
through the construction of a flagship store in the heart of Vienna. Situated at
Neubaugasse 1, right behind mariahilfer Straße, the colourful brand presents
itself as young and forward-looking like rarely before. Where once a cramped
jewellers did business, more than six hundred products can be touched,
tested and bought today in various test stations.
The form and purpose of the light pen permeate the entire shop design as
unobtrusively as they do compellingly. The shop areas themselves, for example,
consist of a “hexagonal tube”, in the style of the marker pen’s shape. and
to give the colourful products the right presentation platform in the specially
developed turning display cases, colours were largely dispensed with. even
the lighting radiates in white light. above all, the distinctiveness of the lighting
concept lies in its restraint: for example, the pens are illuminated only with
integrated leDs, which customers see merely as cones of light. in order to
give the space a sense of orientation, the sales counter and the individual
themed areas are executed in brilliant Stabilo red. in addition to this, a project
wall at the end of the “tunnel” illuminated in the alternating marker colours of
neon green, yellow and red acts as an eyecatcher, with the automatically
changing colours providing constantly new room configurations and experiences
that can also be experienced by passers-by after nightfall.
E Shops with a history are rare, as are six metre-high rooms in an attractive
old building. Yes fortune often favours the brave. and so, many years ago,
alexander Wolfensson transformed the dream property of a disused book
printing shop in Graz city centre into a showcase for the presentation of his
high-class designer fashion. When the space finally fell vacant, he was there
in an instant. Because previous conversion projects has ended up too architectural
for his taste, with the presentation of the goods often suffering as a
result, this time round he did the planning himself. The concept for the redesign
was a simple as it was convincing: to leave the dignified old structure as
untouched as possible and only to add to it carefully with modern elements.
Thus the walls were merely scraped off and then fixed with a base coat. The
result is brickwork whose shades of white, beige and yellow tell its hundred
and thirty year-old history and together with the black oiled solid-wood floor
provide a robust look that distinguishes itself pleasantly from the artificial
aura of comparable show rooms. The clothing however hangs freely in the
room on steel racks, while the accessories are presented on cubes of handforged
steel. To lessen the contrast somewhat between old and new, elegant
luminaires are installed in the suspended ceiling and provide a very special
warmth of light. in contrast, the indirect lighting offset from the ceiling allows
the space to appear higher than it would without it. only an antique chandelier
breaks this lighting concept, but that was also part of the plan for a perfect
balance between architecture and presentation.

E in a society in which image is strongly influenced by fashion, the watch is one of its most important
signals. Tell me what watch you wear and i’ll tell you who you are. To support this construct, the famous
watchmaker audemars piguet decided to use the design of his new boutique in the centre of madrid to
explore an architectural area where space and time create a very special universe that will leave the visitor
becoming part of the brand. a brilliant partner was found in the architects of cGR arquitectos,
whose success is rooted, as so often before, in its approach: thus they decided that the project should
involve precisely the same team that was responsible for making the watches. after all, who can better
understand time than the person who measures it for a profession? The result speaks for itself: as soon
as clients pass through the glass front door to the boutique, the room immediately engages them with
time by developing an intense feeling for it. Natural stone, real palms and flowing forms contrast the
clear design language of the watches and jewellery, which shows its colours of yellow and white gold in
all their naturalness, illuminated at a specific angle by leD strips and a very special mix of warm and
cold light, and also reveals the depth and relief of the engravings in precise texture. Wherever one looks,
one is encaptured by this perfect symbiosis of nature and technology. Were it not for a glass pane
through which the watchmakers can be seen at work, it would actually be possible to lose oneself in the
rush of the eight metre-high waterfall. and for the designers, it was precisely about this moment of the
giving and taking of time, as one notes with every fibre.
of the processes, such as exhibition halls or
Spandau Station in Berlin or the opening in 2006
of the new central Station in Berlin, where most of
the individual buildings of gmp have been built to
date. Whether government buildings, offices,
housing estates, shopping malls or exhibitions
buildings – for gmp, it is always about ”an identity
principle that gmp, with the dynamic expansion of
the company in asia, has long exported successfully
and with numerous project to china – such as
will become a tangible reality from now until its
of media have been changed by the constantly growing use of artificial light
– and so has art. for almost one hundred years, artists have grappled with
the immaterial medium in the form of incandescent bulbs, fluorescent and
neon tubes, leDs and powerful floodlights. The Dutch artists’ collective
pipS:lab uses the specially developed light-writing technology “lumasol” to
create its mysterious light installations. The coloured illusionary spaces are
created solely through the shining writing tools and setting of the aperture,
without any post-production on the computer. The result is an impressive
interplay of colour, space and person, which focuses on the artist himself as
the designer of the space. pipS:lab is yet another example of the wide
spectrum of light as an important medium of art.
pipS:lab has worked in the areas of video art, light graffiti, photo collages and
multimedia performances since 1999.

E The wall as the most fundamental element of
architectural spatial creation was placed by Viennese
architect duo lilli pschill and ali Seghatoleslami
– pSa architekten at the centre of their design
concept for extending the rooms of a law firm
in Vienna city centre. Despite the problematic
floorplan, they converted an 18 metre-long and
only 2.80 metre wide corridor into a two-tone,
floating, multifunctional series of so-called “micro-gathering
places” with various functions as
well as meticulously executed installations in corian
and walnut, into which various features, such
as refrigerator, espresso bar, storage room and
network cabinet, have been integrated. The result
is a functional, atmospheric and lively staging of
the space, which has absolutely nothing to do
with the uninviting atmosphere of conventional,
dreary office corridors and which proves that topquality
architecture is always marked by a scrupulously
precise love for detail. Because on close
inspection, the dynamically curved wall panels
that float out into the room up to a height of 60
centimetres turn out to be impressive masterpieces
of technology: No fewer than 543 different
individual parts cut to size with the cNc milling
machine and made from various, contrasting materials
required perfect precision work in terms of
planning and execution – just as the placing of the
E To create a work atmosphere where all the
of Hamburg marketing agency Syzygy
when planning its new offices on the prominent
corner of Neuer Wall and Jungfernstieg on Hamburg’s
Binnenalster lake. an idea that architects
christoph Roselius and Julian Hillenkamp, the two
founders of eins:eins architekten in Hamburg, took
literally and reinterpreted in a surprising way: they
developed a modular furniture system in which
everyone sits “in” a table. Similar to the cockpit of
a canoe, each workstation is a sunk into a large,
common space and thus literally reinforces cohesion
through the feeling that everyone here is actually
sitting together in the same boat. an amorphous
E When, as was the case of fashion brand
s.oliver , 350 new jobs are created with the conversion
of the company’s headquarters, then that’s a
bonus in itself. However, when that conversion
makes much more space available for everyone,
including previously engaged employees, and
nothing therefore stands in the way of the vision of
the fashion-makers thanks to – metaphorically
speaking – functional optimisation, that is indeed
an architectural good piece of fortune of a company
redesign.
However, as the location initially offered an extremely
heterogenous appearance with its large
logistics buildings and offices, the architects’
main task was to give everything identity. That
their design now also meets the highest of aesthetic
needs and ultimately resulted in the construction
of an impressive building that reflects
the dynamics and zeitgeist of the company, is
shown by the façade: Horizontal bands of windows
and elements of anodised aluminium mark
its appearance. The clear and restrained design
vocabulary is intended to serve as a projection
surface and passepartout for the fashion world of
s.oliver. incised courtyards also give structure to
the building, linking it with the campus and emphasising
its openness with its inviting gestures.
for optimal lighting, all the offices have been arranged
along the façade, with one courtyard being
laid out at as rest zone, with water features
and terraces. communicative areas and variableuse
zones allowed the creation of an ultra-modern
work environment that promotes and radiates creative
work. Visitors are received in the open and
spacious foyer which has various sizes of inte-
grated, round downlights to provide mood lighting
that seems to defy spatial boundaries.

the middle of the new Berlin, organically deformed
bands adapted from the structure of human muscle
fibres encompass a rounded building. in this
way, cut, white-coated aluminium panels and
flush-bonded, black-enamelled glazing reminiscent
of the latest automotive design, enter into
symbiosis with human power. High tech and nature
show how the understanding of biological
processes inspires research and development in
medical technology. above this on three further
floors are offices, conferences rooms and an orthopaedics
practice. While the interior is consistently
minimalist throughout – all the surfaces and
most of the furniture and exhibition objects are in
white; only coloured glass and dark wood panels
add atmospheric accents – the lighting design is
extremely dynamic: a central, three-story steel
staircase in the exhibition area was designed as a
giant sculptural light object. and when darkness
falls, the leD installation “Walker” (also by aRT &
com) provides another eye-catcher: moving
points of light create the image of a person walking
on the full height of the façade.
E colours shape our world. and influence our wellbeing. We use colours specifically to create certain
effects, moods and emotions, whether in architecture, product design, clothing, food or in lighting.
There is a fundamental relationship between colours and light or lighting: not only do objects have colours,
but light itself does as well. Whether and how we perceive colours therefore depends entirely on
the type of lighting: colours of illuminated objects can only be made visible when the wavelengths that
correspond to the colour being illuminated exist in the spectrum of the light source. What this means is
that in order to render the inherent colour of an illuminated object, the light source must contain the
wavelength of this colour in its spectrum. for example, a green salad only looks crisp and green when
sufficient green light is available in the spectrum of the lamp. if there is only a small amount of green
available in the spectrum of the light source then even the freshest salad will appear flat and unappetising
to our eyes. The lighting therefore has a very high influence on the visual perception of colours.
The ability to render light sources and colours, and therefore to make them visible, is measured by the
colour Rendering index (cRi) R a. The colour Rendering index gives the degree of agreement of the colour
of an object with its appearance under a standardised reference light source. Determining the R a
value of a light source is a complex process: it is done by illuminating certain test colours with the light
source to be tested and a standardised reference light source with the optimal R a = 100, which corresponds
to the R a value of sunlight. The reflected spectra are measured and converted into the R a value,
with the wavelength-dependent colour perception of the human eye flowing into the calculation of the
value as an additional factor. This is necessary because the human eye perceives green light as being
slightly brighter than blue light of the same luminous intensity. The higher the R a value of a lamp, the better
the colours of the illuminated objects are rendered. a light source with an R a value of 100 optimally
renders all colours. Such a light source is the sun. Sunlight has a continuous, homogenous spectrum
that is made up of all visible wavelengths and therefore every colour, and can consequently provide
true-to-life rendering of any colour.
The R a value is therefore an important quality criterion of the light source in that the lighting has varying
‘weight’, depending on the area of application. The R a values of luminaires are categorised in six groups,
with each group being used for a variety of lighting tasks (see table). for example, the lighting of art
works in museums and galleries requires precise rendering of the colours and therefore a very high R a
value. colour rendering is also extremely important for the lighting of food: sausage, meat and vegetables
will only be snapped up if they look fresh and appetising. for this to happen, the fresh colours must
be appropriately rendered by the lighting. lighting with an R a value of
at least 90 is used here – especially for exquisite foods that aim to
satisfy the most sophisticated of palates. in other areas, lower colour
rendering values are deliberately used. for example, colour rendering
in street lighting plays a very subordinate role – light sources in
Group 4 suffice here. as we know, all cats look grey to us at night.
There is a reason why luminaires with an optimal R a value are not
used in all lighting applications. apart from the colour rendering,
there are other decisive criteria such as energy efficiency, colour
temperature, luminous flux, service life, dimmability, warm-up times
and last but not least the price, all of which influence the choice of
luminaire. finally, when choosing the luminaire, a compromise has to
be found between the criteria mentioned, which undergo a different
weighting depending on the area of application.
Group crI r a lighting application Examples
1a > 90
museums, galleries, exquisite food and high
quality products in shops
1B 80–89 offices, dining and sales areas
2a 70–79 offices, shops for average requirements
2B 60–69 electrical industry, power stations
3 40–59 factory buildings, indoor routes
The most recent “victim” of this weighting and selection is the incandescent
bulb. it possesses an excellent R a value of about 99 and therefore ranks just behind sunlight,
with the optimal R a value of 100. However, the incandescent bulb is having to leave the playing field because
of its poor energy efficiency. There have recently also been efficient halogen metal vapour lamps
(HiT) and efficient fluorescent lamps on the market, which are available in some colour temperatures
with R a values in excess of 90, and therefore in the highest Group 1a. Yet even here there are some disadvantages
that cannot be ignored: HiT luminaires cannot be dimmed and take a long time to warm up,
while fluorescent lamps are only available in cold colour temperatures, which we normally find uncomfortable.
a new path is being forged in this area by the leD, which is continuing its tremendous triumphal march
on the lighting market and has since taken a clear lead in the area of colour rendering. apart from its
constantly rising energy efficiency, unrivalled service life, the benefits of instant warm-up without having
to wait and its ability to dim, the R a value is also rising constantly. for example, leDs are now available
on the market with an R a value of up to 96 (Group 1a) and only insignificantly less efficiency than the already
common High-power leD in Group 1B, which has R a values of 80–89. The advantage over the
conventional High-power leD can be explained as follows: the leD comprises a semiconductor chip
that emits blue light, overlaid with a yellow fluorescent layer, which together produces white light. increasing
the amount of green and red in the fluorescent layer produces the most continuous spectrum
possible. This continuous, relatively homogenous spectrum enables the rendering of all colours contained
in the spectrum. The leD therefore offers solutions that require ever fewer compromises. xal
does not make any compromises in its lighting solutions either: as standard, xal uses leDs with an R a
value of 85 in warm and neutral white and optionally leDs with an R a value of over 95. xal is fully independent
when it comes to choosing its leDs and can therefore select the ideal leD in the desired quality
from the product range of manufacturers around the world for the application in question. on request,
xal also develops pcBs, thermal management systems and controls to suit customer
requirements in its electronics Development Department. The pcB are assembled in-house using the
SmD assembly system. xal offers various binning categories on request: the addition pre-sorting of the
leDs allows differences in colour and brightness that are tolerated by the manufacturer, but still identifiable
to the eye, to be minimised in order to achieve the most homogenous lighting experience possible.
xal has therefore become a complete provider of standard and individual leD lighting solutions. The
future belongs to the leD!
4 20-39 Heavy industry, street lighting, building sites
E a 12 th century fortress to the north of Graz will
in future be used as an extraordinary venue for
functions and seminars as well as an attractive
event and exhibition location. The challenge in
adapting the impressive, more than 800 year-old
building was to find a modern way to develop the
defensive building, which was originally designed
to make access as difficult as possible and is located
high on a cliff right above the banks of the
federal monument office, the commissioned planner-architect
Hans-Walter Tanos developed a sensational
project that places ultra-modern architecture
in attractive contrast and harmonious
agreement with the mediaeval structure. The spectacular
new access ways to the castle comprise a
tunnel of more than 50 metres in length which ends
in a concrete funnel, a 52 metre-high panorama
lift has a special feature: the specially developed
construction for the project is the first lift in the
lift car (which can hold a maximum of 13 people)
rotates inside the glass tower depending on the selected
speed of travel by up to 540 degrees and
therefore offers not only a special kind of travel experience,
E co2 emissions trading has become a central
buzzword of today’s global climate policy. a topic
for which Nitipak Samsen, a young london designer
and graduate of the Royal college of art,
has developed an intelligent design study as
something to get people thinking. His concept,
dubbed aTReem (automated Tree Rental emission
exchange machine), envisages credit card
terminals attached to trees, which are intended to
make the principle of emissions trading tangible
and usable for everyone in a simply and surprising
way. as soon as aTReem is installed on a
tree, the mounting clip of the credit card terminal
automatically measures the diameter of the tree
and the electronics provide the data required to
calculate the biomass and hence the quantity of
co2 that the tree can absorb. if the user swipes
his or her credit card, the device’s small user interface
display shows information on the current
co2 content of the surrounding air, the co2 offset
potential of the tree in question and the
charges to be paid to rent the tree to offset a
specific quantity of co2 for a specific period of
time. for the future, Nitipak Samsen’s concept
envisages the use of aTReem in greened urban
areas or in specially planted tree nurseries or
plantations – the perfect opportunity to make climate
protection part of a shopping trip, as an informative
personal shopping experience via
credit card.
(automated Tree Rental emission exchange machine),
E The topic of “acoustic space and its dramatic
effect” may have been adequately researched by
everyone from le corbusier to xenakis, but for the
architects of UNStudio it nevertheless still holds a
vast amount of fascination and influences, as
shown by the newly built centre for music and musical
theatre at the University of music and performing
arts in Graz (mUmUTH for short). for example,
the architecture of the centre, in which
students not only experience artistic education at
the highest level, but can also test the “emergency”
of their future professional life with public
appearances under professional conditions,
should express that it is a place where music lives.
This was achieved on the one hand with a convertible
stage that allows all sizes of event to be held,
from jazz club to orchestra concert. a clear signal
in this direction is also sent by the “Twist”: a loadbearing
spiral element that links the public space
of the foyer with the music rooms above, thereby
artistically welding the various levels of the building
with each other. everything revolves around
this massive concrete construction, including the
lighting: The centrality is reinforced by the interplay
between linear and round luminaires and is
additionally illuminated through a roof window with
dark wooden slats, which makes the spiral rotation
appear like a fan. While the façade of mUmUTH
appears somewhat plain and withdrawn during the
day, this closeness slowly lifts as darkness falls,
with mUmUTH becoming increasingly transparent
and offering glimpses of its internal life: The geometries
of the Twist and the visitors become visible
and stand in contrast with the patterns on the
façade and indoors captured in the muted tones of
stage make-up.
mUmUTH parece bastante sencilla y totalmente
bEn Van bErKEl, dIrEcTor unsTudIo
“The relationship between music and architecture is a
classic one. Too classic for our time, many contemporary
architects might think. But that’s not our view; UNStudio
likes the classic with ‘twists’ ...”
E Saint Jacob’s convent in the Belgian town of
Tongeren, the oldest town in the country, can look
back over a truly long history. as early as the twelfth
century, it served as a place of lodging and a resting
place for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de
compostela. over the centuries, it grew into an integral
part, if not the symbol, of the town centre. as
a four-star hotel, it still invites people to stop awhile
– only now after being spectacularly converted into
a totally new getup that breathes the spirit of the
middle ages and successfully connects it with contemporary
design and colour language. The impressive
entrance hall, with its six-metre high ceiling,
immediately and emphatically reminds visitors
of those times when it was not a sophisticated hotel,
but merely an inn. above all, the old, characteristic
structures, in particular the room height and
windows, were retained as far as possible.
However, the team of architects breathed a good
portion of zeitgeist into the old walls through the
consistently powerful colours and textures of the
new minimalist interior. in the process, the monumental
architecture of the building was used like a
blank canvass onto which colour and finesse were
projected. The modern world also finds its way
into the rooms in the design and the technology:
travellers, whether business people or holidaymakers,
can find peace in today’s eburon, without
having to dispense with the blessings (flatscreen
TVs that can be watched from the bathtub, ipod
connections, etc.).
Within this overall skilfully staged dialogue between
old and new, the interplay between natural and artificial
light on the one hand and shadow on the
other is cleverly employed as a decorative element.

The pöstlingberg, a hill to the north of linz, can be scaled along a city hiking
trail or in comfort on board the eponymous narrow-gauge railway. it is both a
symbol of the city and a popular destination for local day-trippers. The area’s
proximity to linz, the green surroundings and above all the view have made it
one of the city’s most elegant residential districts. anyone who has a private
view of linz, the Danube valley and the alps in the background, away from
the public viewing platform, can consider themselves fortunate. This is demonstrated
by Villa a, situated on the pöstlingberg: following the logic of the
slope, the villa was partly embedded into the mountain. a large canopy,
which slopes to the south like the terrain, marks and defines the main entrance,
while the entire south-facing façade opens up to a generous panoramic
view. To ensure privacy from the road, the façade, which is finished in
natural stone, is devoid of openings – except for the band of fanlights, which
creates a link to the landscape. The sloping site also allows direct access to
the garden, whose walls continue the facade.
The interior shows how different functions are grouped in an open-plan living
space and yet retain their identity: Different floor levels sub-divide the space,
as do the floor materials, which vary depending on function and level. The
upper floor, which accommodates the bedrooms and bathrooms, is accessed
by an open gallery. The large-scale glazing creates a flowing transition
to the nature outside. landscape, garden with pool and building intertwine
– an effect that is further reinforced by the consistently unobtrusive
lighting concept. only the canopy is directly illuminated, making it literally
seem to float above the walls at night.
