What then 66 proach gave hope to many mathematicians that, given the limitations on possible remaining solutions, Fermat’s Last Theorem would soon have an elegant, attainable solution. While many attempts were made and new methods invented, no solution came for over 200 years.
Chapter 6 Conclusion 6.1 And Beyond In 1825, Legendre and Dirichelet’s proofs of n = 5 were the first complete and correct proofs in existence of exponents for which Fermat’s Last Theorem was true. Seven years later, Dirichlet proved n = 14 using similar methods of descent. He was actually attempting to prove n = 7, but never published a complete proof. The case of Fermat’s Last Theorem for n = 7 was picked up by Lamé. In order to solve n = 7, Lamé turned towards new methods, presenting his proof in 1839. Emboldened by his success, Lamé erroneously claimed to the Paris Académie on March 1, 1847, that he had found a proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem. His proof required linear factoring of the equation x n + y n = z n over the complex numbers. There was a snag; unique factorization, though true over the integers, does not work over all rings.
