a forgé ma personnalité de cinéaste. J’y suis
sensible, par essence, tout naturellement.
onAir : Ne pensez-vous pas que mettre
en lumière une période peu glorieuse pour
la France par rapport aux Antilles risque
de raviver un possible malaise ?
JCB : Non, et ce n’est pas le but recherché !
En montrant ce qui n’a pas fonctionné par
le passé, au-delà de mieux comprendre la
situation actuelle, cela permet de trouver des
directions positives pour l’avenir. Dans le film,
dès que le ton monte, s’ensuit un apaisement ;
dès qu’il y a excitation, se trame une accalmie…
onAir : Avez-vous justement rencontré certains
obstacles en abordant ces sujets ?
JCB : Non, grâce au type de production
mis en place… N’ayant pas à rendre de
comptes à des financeurs et ne partageant
pas forcément les mêmes idées que celles
développées dans le film qui est avant tout
une preuve d’universalité. Et c’est pour
cette même raison qu’il fait intervenir
des acteurs des Antilles et d'Afrique. En
effet, si tel individu « colle » parfaitement au
rôle, c’est que c’est pour moi la bonne
personne, indépendamment de ses origines.
onAir : Avez-vous donc l’envie de
présenter ce film aux 4 coins du globe ?
JCB : En effet, après les Antilles et la France,
nous nous rendrons en Afrique du Sud, au
Bénin, à Montréal, à New-York et à Chicago...
onAir : Via Air Antilles-Guyane, cet article
sera lu par des Caribéens francophones,
anglophones et hispanophones. Avez-vous
un petit message à leur adresser ?
JCB : Je souhaiterais leur dire que nous
sommes tous dans le même cockpit, que
parfois le pilote change, mais que nous arrivons
toujours à la bonne destination !
onAir : Avez-vous une île préférée dans
la Caraïbe ?
JCB : Ayant des origines de Trinidad et
Tobaggo, j’ai eu la chance de m’y rendre en
famille… Ce fut un grand moment d’émotion !
onAir : On Air est fan de votre casquette…
C’est qui ce « visage » ?
JCB : Il m’évoque à la fois Lauryn Hill sur
l’album Miseducation et également Angela
Davis ; et c’est un mix qui me plaît (rires) !

onAir : Is it possible that spotlighting
an inglorious period in French history risks
rekindling unrest?
JCB: No, and that’s not the point! By
showing what didn’t work in the past,
beyond a better understanding of the
current situation, it allows, in my view, to
find new positive directions for the future.
In the film, whenever the tone rises, it then
cools off; whenever there is excitement,
there is a lull…
onAir : Have you encountered obstacles
in broaching these topics?
JCB: No, because of the type of production
that we’ve chosen… Not having
to answer to financial backers, who
won’t necessarily share the ideas that
are developed in the film… That granted
me considerable freedom… This film, it is
foremost a proof of universality. And
that’s also why the film includes West
Indian and African actors. Actually, if an
individual fits a role perfectly, for me that’s
the right person, regardless of where the
person is from.
onAir : Are you looking to present the
film internationally?
JCB: Yes, after the West Indies and France,
we’ll be traveling to South Africa, Benin,
Montreal, New York and Chicago...
onAir : Via Air Antilles-Guyane, this
article will be read by French-, English-, and
Spanish-speakers throughout the Caribbean.
Do you have a message for them?
JCB: I’d like to tell them that we are all in
the same plane, that sometimes the pilot
changes, but we’ll always reach the right
destination!
onAir : Do you have a favorite Caribbean
island?
JCB: Having roots in Trinidad and Tobago,
I had the chance of being there with family...
It was really an emotional experience!
onAir : ON AIR loves your cap… Who’s
the face?
JCB: It reminds me of Lauryn Hill on
her “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” album
and also of Angela Davis; and I like the mix!
