pouvoir étendre ses zones d’intervention pour couvrir
l’ensemble des 13 zones côtières de Madagascar.
Dernier point, mais non des moindres, la création
d’un guide des bonnes pratiques des LMMA
est aussi un objectif important pour nous. Cela

As a Whitley Award winner your prize was £40,000
in project funding over one year. How will you
spend it?
Winning a Whitley Award has given the team the
capacity to realign the priorities for MIHARI and
make progress towards fulfilling our ambition for
small-scale fishers.
We will use the award to finance vital training
for LMMA leaders, in order for them to gain more
technical skills and participate even more in the
sustainable management of their marine resources.
This award will also finance our work towards
setting up a legal framework for LMMAs in
collaboration with the Government. MIHARI will
organise an LMMA symposium and visits to LMMAs
with Ministry representatives. To develop this legal
framework, we will continue our discussions with
the authorities to establish a ban on the use of
destructive fishing gear, and for the creation of a
reserved fishing zone. With this award, MIHARI will
also be able to expand its intervention zone to cover
all 13 coastal zones of Madagascar.
Last but not least, creating a guide to LMMA good
practices is also an important goal for us. This guide
will garner all acquired knowledge about LMMAs
since their establishment in Madagascar, and will be
a reference tool for communities of fishers and NGO
partners.
