A new field for the orthodontic and dental office
Snoring not only disturbs sleep…snoring can also cause serious illness.
Many people remain tired and unrefreshed after a long sleep. They fall into
short sleeping phases during the day.
A substantial portion of the population suffers from sleep-related breathing
disturbances. Snoring, a phenomenon that has until recently been judged
to be harmless, is today a major subject of research an calls for cooperation
between dentists, internists, pulmonary specialists and sleep specialists.
Everyone experiences phases of interrupted breathing during sleep. When
these episodes last longer then ten seconds and occur more than ten times
an hour, dysfunction must be assumed. When the throat muscles relax, the
breathing passages close. Heart arrhythmia can arise since the body scarcely
absorbs any oxygen from the lungs during this period. Since continuous
shortage of breath prevents attaining the refreshing deep sleep phase, the
various sleep phases are significantly disturbed. During the day the performance
is substantially reduced.
A considerable part of the population suffers from such breathing problems
during sleep – as obstructice sleep apnea ( OSA) – which can be the reason
for different diseases. The life expectancy of patients with sleep apnea is
significantly shortened.
It is important to quickly treat such breathing disturbances.
In the interdisciplinary cooperation with ear-, nose- and throat- specialists,
sleep disorder centres and dental professions, obstructive sleep apnea, obstructive
snoring and primary snoring can be treated successfully with oral-
appliances.
Coming from the orthodontic technology, Peter Stückrad is a Master Dental
Technician in Germany for over 10 years and has comprehensive international
experience in the manufacturing of the different therapeutic appliances
for the treatment of snoring and sleep apnoea.
Currently the manager of a technical laboratory in Wuerzburg, Germany
dedicated solely to the design and fabrication of oral sleep appliances.
He has lectured extensively to dental technicians, dentists and sleep physicians
throughout Europe and the U.S.A.
Peter Stueckrad is giving an overview about the treatment and the most
common Snoring-Therapy-Appliances.
