week, organized annually by “<strong>Jakin</strong>”,<br />

the magazine calls upon the majority<br />

nationalist political parties (abertzales)<br />

of the Autonomous Basque<br />

Community (Euskadi) for an exposure<br />

of their general guidelines on linguistic<br />

policy and its application, both<br />

within the party and within three important<br />

social areas: education, mass<br />

media and Public Administration.<br />

Nationalist parties (EA, EB, EMA,<br />

I PAR BURU BILTZARRA, EAJ/PNV) ,<br />

who were sent the following schemes:<br />

valuation of the presence of Euskara<br />

in North Euskadi (Iparralde) in<br />

education, mass media and<br />

Administration; valuation of the<br />

Linguistic Plans of South Euskadi’s<br />

parties, and a critique of the vision<br />

held by South Euskadi’s political<br />

parties vis-à-vis North Euskadi.<br />

THE LINGUISTIC POLICY OF EAJ/PNV<br />

<strong>ROMAN</strong> <strong>BERRIOZABAL</strong><br />

In these slow but hopeful times of<br />

national re s h u ffle, EAJ/PNV wish to<br />

display their determination to contribute<br />

to normalizing the use of the<br />

Basque Language (Euskara).<br />

The Basque Language (Euskara) in<br />

EAJ/PNV’s opinion, has never experienced,<br />

throughout its history, such a<br />

recognition and support as it receives<br />

nowadays in dif f e rent fields (Education,<br />

Mass Media, Administration...).<br />

On the other hand it is also<br />

true that the Basque Language<br />

(Euskara) has never been in such a<br />

critical situation as it is now (Basque<br />

speakers in minority, Basque illiteracy,<br />

the receding vitality of the Basque<br />

language...). These are the r e a s o n s<br />

why the outspreading of its knowledge,<br />

as well as its use in every field
