the future —to be or not to be a
Basque speaker—, fact that every
single Basque, and every single
political party that re p resents them,
should freely assume and support.
EAJ/PNV have taken the decision
to take on this challenge in favour of
the Basque Language (Euskara).
Is there really any way out? How
can we avoid disorganization and
escape the total extinction of this language
of ours which, whilst having a
fairly healthy c o r p u s, yields such a
weak s t a t u s? What future awaits
Euskara when all the mechanisms
and necessary conditions for its linguistic
development and the sociolinguistics
of the social inertia are on the
side of (the) other language(s)? What
sort of significant change must be
p roduced so that the Social survival
of Euskara becomes a reality, i.e.
reaches its normalization? Albeit it is

true that it has forged a little ground
in some -but very scanty- social circles,
what should be done to change
the course and slow down the incessant
general retrogression that it has
always suff e red and to this day still
suffers? What must and can be done
in concrete terms by a political party?
The author exposes the plans for
Euskara pursued by Herri Batasuna,
a party that maintains as its
fundamental strategic goal, the
construc-tion of a free, united,
socialist and Euskaldun “Basque
State”.
The main purpose of this work is to
i n f o rm our society of the strategy
followed by Eusko Alkartasuna with
re g a rd to linguistic policy, as well as
the actions that are carried out with
regard to its application.
The criteria are as follows:
Euskara is, above all, the language
of the Basque people; it is the national
language of Euskadi; through being
a minority language its survival is in
serious danger; linguistic Policy is to
all sense and purposes a kind of

social intervention encouraged by the
Administration; the political parties,
whilst carrying out a deter m i n e d
Linguistic Policy through the
institutions, are at the same time
social institutions themselves.
Eusko Alkartasuna’s linguistic policy
is thus, rooted in the development
of these guidelines so as to overcome
the dangers and harm that surround
both the party and the social work in
which the party involves itself
through various areas of social life.
