of these are misspelled in modern terms because they have been historically spelled as such. Common
names originating from aboriginal languages often are spelled phonetically and therefore crudely - I’d be
quite willing to correct these - if anyone would like to e-mail the corrections to me.
WARNING: A few historical common names are offensive – and I include myself as getting offended by
some of them as a few are blatantly racist and ugly. I still kept them. Why? However offensive, historical
common names are kept here because they may be useful in trying to identify species that are so
designated in older documents. I despise certain common names, I do not endorse or use these names
myself, and I did not create these names. I therefore accept no responsibility if anyone besides me is
offended by common names and users of this file will have to do so at the risk of personal offense. That it is
the problem of history and legacy – I’d rather explicate the stupidity and expose it rather than pretend it
never existed.
