NUMERABILI e NON-NUMERABILI
Countable and uncountable nouns
He was carrying a bag when we saw him.
It was difficult to choose between the two cars he proposed to us.
There were only some chairs and a table but no armchairs in the room.
nomi astratti (life, death, happiness)
discipline (philosophy, mathematics)
nomi di lingue (English, French, Italian)
nomi di malattie (flu, asthma, gastritis)
gerundio (smoking, reading, jogging).
The joints which break down most rapidly during decomposition (‘unstable’ or ‘labile’ joints) are
the most useful for establishing whether a burial is primary because, if they appear to be still
connected, then a short time has elapsed between death and the decomposition of the corpse. (The
Archaeology of the Dead, 26).
information, news, advice, progress, research, furniture, equipment. Questi nomi rifiutano l’articolo
determinativo, che può essere sostituito da some, oppure da a piece of, an item of, etc.
A piece of advice
An item of news
A piece of furniture
I want to buy a cake for Gary’s birthday. (numerabile)
Would you like some cake (non numerabile)?
