In the last week in April, Roberto Ciuni, one of the bestknownItalian journalists and writers died. In addition tobeing editor of important newspapers (Il Giornale diSicilia, La Nazione, Il Mattino) he also wrote historybooks and other works about Capri.Roberto Ciuni spent many periods of work and holidayon the island that he described with such greatintensity, together with his wife Eugenia. That is why wewish to remember him by re-publishing the first editionof Capri Review, from 1994. It is a precious testimony toa love that should not be forgotten.ALDO HANSENRoberto ed Eugenia Ciuni.
to alla vulcanica Ischia. Roberto CiuniPerhaps the golden statue of theEmperor Tiberius is in a cleft in therock: a boy is said to have seen it along time ago. Or perhaps it is at thebottom of the sea, where no-one has everseen it but tales have been told about itover the centuries. Norman Douglasthought he knew the reason for these Caprilegends: evil spirits, he said, took refugeunderground with all their trappings. Theriotous pagan rites of the Roman era in thegrottoes of the island – another legend –are attributed to the misdeeds of Tiberiusbut were, it seems, gossip on the part ofSuetonius. After two millennia, the younggirls and boys sacrificed to the emperor’slust are still talked about by the folk onCapri, an island that likes to be the objectof ambiguous opinions: seductive andiniquitous, radiant and obscene.Edwin Cerio, who was half Irish, soughtto debunk the “curse” of Capri bycounting its botanical varieties: hestopped when he reached 850,exhausted and angry at those who hadimported the “intruder”, bougainvillea, contaminating the Mediterranean purityof local flora. “A baroque pearl” to RogerPeyrefitte, a “solitary rock on which allflowers have taken up their abode”according to Norman Douglas, Caprioffers itself to the imagination, as well asto the eye, of the visitor. One can indulgein fancies about its chromatic mysteries– the colour of the water in the BlueGrotto, the blue lizard of the Faraglioniwhich at a certain point turns brown –and about tales, ancient and recent, ofcontorted love affairs. One may wonderhow nature has allowed an island ofAppennine rock to sit alongside thevolcanic Ischia. From Villa Jovis, you canimagine Tiberius governing his empirefrom afar. Walking through the narrowlanes of the medieval town it is possibleto daydream about the dark centuries ofCapri, poor as a churchmouse until thenineteenth century.Early in the morning, from the summit ofthe rocks over the sea, the peregrinefalcons hurtle down in pursuit of theirfoe, the seagulls. Once, the sight of theyear was the passage of the quails whichwere captured in nets. The wild rabbit isthe king of the maquis. When youbefriend one of the local “catchers”(called schiappaiuoli), who are rockclimbers-cum-hunters-cum-fishermencapable of scaling even the Faraglioni, filling a boat with garfish and grabbing arabbit with their hands, all themysterious veils shrouding Capri fall andthe emperor of legend becomes, morefamiliarly, “Timberio”.9
