ALL THE COLOURSOF THE RAINBOWThe colours of the title are the onesthat set alight the fabrics of the Liviode Simone creations, the historicdesigner label now managed by thedaughter of the painter-stylist. Hereshe talks about some of her mostbeautiful memories of life on the islandAn interview with Benedetta de Simoneby Antonia Matarrese68 97“In our family we have always been goodat splattering ourselves: with colours, icecream, tomato from pizzas, doggy pawprints.” She smiles and gesticulates with thatcharming theatricality that only trueNeapolitans have. Tall, slim and suntanned,Benedetta de Simone orders a coffee in thesalon of her boutique-nest in Via Morelli, in theheart of Naples. Her father, Livio de Simone, started the business in 1973, but the story ofthis eccentric fashion designer, whose name isto Naples what Emilio Pucci’s is to Florence, has its roots long before that, in 1958. “Theagency headquarters was in an old seventeenthcentury farmhouse, now back in my possession,in the Chiaiano area. That’s where my fondestchildhood memories come from,” Benedettatells me. She is married, with three preadolescentchildren, and owns marketing andfashion studios in the United States and Milan.“I was rather a solitary child, like many onlychildren, and I used to play in the cherryorchards and spend hours and hours in theprint shop, my kingdom. The print shop was myschool of life until I was ten years old: that waswhere people worked, new models werecreated, and what went on to become the deSimone colours were chosen. My favourites? Allthe shades of rose and fuchsia – they suit mebest.”For the 2010 spring/summer season, thedesigner has focused on aubergine, air forceblue, periwinkle, dark blue and violet. The musthavepiece by de Simone this season is the shirt, which to some extent represents the generationalchanges within this historic label: “The new ideasoften take their cue from pieces from thearchives which I redevelop with my creative team.It goes without saying that the two types ofprints, hand prints and block prints are the sameas the ones used by my father and by the printerGeppino, who still works with me. This summerwe rediscovered the L-logo, which dates back tothe mid-1960s.” Yes – the 1960s – the years ofthe economic boom and of the paparazzipursuing film stars and celebrities from theinternational jet set: Audrey Hepburn, Lucia▼95
