Semi-continuous casting
of aluminium-lithium alloy semis
Semi-continuous casting in water of aluminium alloys with
alithiumcontentofmorethan1%mustbecarriedout
in strictly controlled conditions because of the highly
exothermic oxidation reaction between Li and water
or humid environments, with consequent risks of
explosion. Over the years, control systems have been
developed and often patented, which prevent contact
between the liquid metal and water from the cooling
system, as well as any excessive segregation and the
formation of radial cracks in the billets and slabs. Even
with these precautions, the surfaces of billets and slabs
made out of these alloys still remain much more prone
to defects with respect to other commercial aluminium alloys.
Figure 3 shows a DC-cast, 2xxx+Li alloy billet in the
laboratories of one of the world’s main suppliers of casting
plants which represents the current state of the art for
this alloy. Note the surface oxidation of the Al-Li alloy with respect
to a 6xxx alloy billet with a larger diameter.
Weldalite 049, in the T8 ageing state after negative
quenching and hardening treatments, presents high tensile
properties. In order to obtain such performances, a small
Ag and Mg content is essential. These alloying elements
lead to the precipitation of hardening compounds which is
highly coherent, not on the grain boundaries, but uniformly
distributed within the matrix.
