§ 3. Tweede postulaat: Schaarste
In The Origin of Species stelt Darwin in navolging van Malthus, dat schaarste optreedt als ongebreidelde
voortplanting op de grenzen stuit van de bewoonbare wereld. De eindige leefomgeving stelt grenzen
aan de populatiegroei. Schaarste mondt uit in een perpetual struggle for room and food. Deze exponentiële
populatiegroei wordt veroorzaakt door een sterk instinct tot voortplanting. 69 Maar schaarste slaat hier
enkel op leefruimte en voedsel. In The Origin of Species introduceert Darwin een andere betekenis van
schaarste; namelijk aan voortplantingsmogelijkheden. 70 Deze schaarste brengt een concurrentiestrijd
tussen mannen om differentiële vermenigvuldiging teweeg.
