Tougher environmental laws enable the government to tackle the enormous pollution caused by oil spillage and industrial waste. “The polluters are taxed and more money is becoming available to clean up the environment.” Staying in Holland, back to China after work experience After taking her MBA degree, Wu Jing, a student from China, would like to stay in Holland for some years, working for an international company. Competition in China is increasing day by day and her chances of finding a satisfying job in her home country will increase when she has international work experience under her belt. Another Chinese student, Zhang Ji, who is taking a final year in Finance and Accounting, hopes to find a job at a financial company or bank in Holland to gain work experience before trying her luck on the highly competitive Chinese labour market. “One of my goals is learning Dutch as quickly as possible.’’ Settling in Holland, if possible Muhammad Adi Insani, an Indonesian student who is in his third year of Electric and Electronic Engineering wants to stay and work in Holland. He is doing a traineeship right now and he is quite sure there will be job opportunities for him here. Promotion at home after Short Course at Saxion Short Course students come to Saxion with another aim. They are usually a bit older and have already worked for a number of years. The Short Courses last from 3 to 6 months and consist of a number of key modules of longer programmes. Tanzanian Egidia Peter Rwazi has just arrived at Saxion to do a Short Course in International Business Management. After coming back home, she hopes to be promoted to a higher position in the insurance company she has been employed by for a number of years. Egidia’s fellow course participant is Lilit Duryan from Armenia. She works as an accountant for a consultancy firm in the field of development aid. “The firm wants to expand its services to auditing and business development so I am sure the knowledge acquired at Saxion will stand me in good stead in the new post I was promised.” Hannie Schipper Blogs of international students Blogs are in these days. Monday Teaching Chinese Got up early to have enough time to check my email before going to school. Got an interesting email from Shanghai.A friend of mine wrote how she and her mother had had to flee for the typhoon. At first they did not want to leave their house, but finally they got away in a taxi to a place 50 kms further north. There was a lot of damage in the city, but fortunately their house was not hit by the storm. Tuesday Organized a party to celebrate our mid-autumn Tuesday festival with my Chinese class mates. Also invited two Vietnamese class mates to our party. We ate moon cakes, a traditional Chinese food for the midautumn festival, and played anagrammatism. Wednesday Had a discussion with group members and prepared a lesson for the lady I’m teaching Chinese. It seems that a lot of Dutch people want to learn Chinese. Thursday This afternoon had an interesting Chinese lesson with the Dutch lady, a practice lesson outside. She used the words which she had already learnt to describe the city centre. Very funny, aha! International Sunday Doing the GPS Tour Got an email from a friend from Singapore, who had to write a report on blogs on Gmail and Yahoo mail. Glad to be able to help her out as I often put blogs on Yahoo myself. Monday Studied at school from 11:00- 5:00. Worked in the new library where all the computer screens have been replaced by flat screens. Great improvement. The interior of the library got a fantastic facelift with grey and lime green colours. Tuesday Today was Moon Day in Vietnam, China and other Asian countries. Had a party at my place with lots of people, among them newly arrived Vietnamese students. Had moon cake (cake made of eggs filled with meat or green beans), which some people had brought from Vietnam. Wednesday First day of IBMS and CE Introduction for 1st year students at Stay Okay Nijverdal. Did the GPS Tour: Had to cooperate to find our way to an unknown location by means of a GPS. BBQ in the evening. Later on watched PSV beat CSKA Moscow by 2-0. Excellent job by PSV strikers. Happy to see that my favourite team Manchester United also won their game vs. Sporting Lisbon. Thursday Second day of introduction: Canoeing and cycling. Although I can swim and know how to paddle, I like cycling best. Some boys fell into the water when their canoe capsized. Lots of fun. Later, enjoyed the delicious buffet. Friday Went home, very, very tired Saturday Slept longer than usual. Still very tired. Just relaxed. Nguyen Van Truong Thi Googling for Vietnamese recipes Sunday Today my turn to cook dinner for my 4 friends. Wanted to surprise them with delicious food. Had googled for a Vietnamese recipe and got the ingredients from the Toko at the centre of Deventer. Interesting discussion over dinner about which is the most popular subjects of the course. All 4 friends like Marketing best, whereas I prefer Finance. But of course all of us want to become businesswomen. Monday Went to early morning lecture. Few students were there. Difficult to concentrate, not fully awake yet. Later on group meeting for Marketing Research and Business Ethics. The three of us (two Chinese, one Vietnamese) work well together as a team. Tuesday Day off!! Did some studying. Greater part of the day relaxed with funny items on You Tube. Wednesday At lunchtime asked fellow student to help me solve a problem with an assignment. In the evening talked to one of my roommates about how she had spent her lesson-free day. Did some exercises before going to sleep. Thursday Consumer behaviour class turned out to be a lot of fun again. Many students reported funny incidents as customers in shops: such as, not having enough money to pay, returning and complaining about food they had nearly finished. In the evening, had to make an entry in my consumer diary to be kept for this class. Had to record an impulse purchase: could not resist a jacket with fifty percent off the normal retail price. What a bargain! Friday Did assignment for next week. Visitedthe open market. Had less money to spend than last week because of yesterday’s bargain. Yet went to Happy Days in the centre of Deventer with a group of international students. Great fun! Saturday Our downstairs VN neighbour, a hobby cook, cooked one of his special meals.
