Munhoz, L. O. Study of enamel width in the proximal sides of human maxillary first
premolars. [Dissertação de Mestrado]. São Paulo: Universidade Cidade de São
Paulo; 2008.
ABSTRACT
This study has the goal of determining the enamel width in the proximal sides at the
level of proximal contacts of human maxillary first premolars as well as analyzing
possible correlations with the crown dimension of these teeth. The stripping of these
regions is frequently used not only in the orthodontic clinic with the objective of
correcting tooth-arch size discrepancies and increasing the stability of treatment as
well in prosthodontics and operative dentistry. In this study, forty human maxillary
first premolars were analyzed. Measurements of mesiodistal, faciolingual and
cervicocclusal dimensions were taken with a digital caliper; further the teeth were
included in composites and sectioned, to obtain a 1mm-thick central section, which
permitted the measurement of enamel width in a perfilometer with millesimal
precision, at the level of proximal contact points. The data were submitted to
statistical analysis, and it was found some correlations between crown dimension
and proximal enamel width which was always thicker in the distal surface than in the
mesial surface.
