Mercopar celebrates its
twentieth edition
M
ercopar - Subcontracting
and Industrial Innovation Fair, held
in Caxias do Sul / RS, from 18 to 21
October 2011, is in its twentieth consecutive
annual edition. The well recognized
performance become an important tool for
the industrial development in the following
sectors: metal-mechanic, electronics, rubber,
plastics, industrial automation and services,
energy and environment, as well as materials
handling and storage.
The event is realized and promoted by
Sebrae/RS togheter with Hannover
Fairs Sulamérica, a subsidiary
of Deutsche Messe AG, who organize
Hannover Industrial Fair in Germany.
The scenery
Mercopar arose and
developed throughout the 90’s, inserted
into the recession scenery that marked the
Brazilian economy over that period. This
situation was highlighted by a change
in Brazilian industrial model. The arrival of
globalization forced the improvement of
industries. It was a choice between all or
nothing - modernizing or closing the doors.
In the early 90›s, the discussion about
the practice of industrial subcontracting was
much in vogue, which implies the hiring of
micro and small companies from medium
and large companies, in several
industrial segments.
Mercopar is intertwined
with the history
of Sebrae / RS
Sebrae/RS, entity reformed in 1990, is
the result of the old public system called
CEBRAE. It was necessary to make the
new entity known.
Carlos Alberto Rico Manzoli, then managing
director of Sebrae/RS, found in
Hannover Subcontracting Industrial Fair’s
Hall the inspiration that encouraged him to
try something similar in Rio Grande do
Sul. The team accepted the challenge
of implementing the new project in only
four months. And so was born Mercopar
– Industrial Subcontracting Fair of MERCOSUL
- in Caxias do Sul, which is the main industrial
hub of Rio Grande do Sul. An union
of Mercosul and partnerships.
A new show concept
There was no fair in Brazil focusing so
clearly the connections between the micro /
small and medium /large enterprises.
The problem was how to get the
mobilization of large companies, who
usually participated in fairs just to sell
products and not to buy. The solution was
to install matchmakings of the Buyer Project
right on the first edition, inviting experts from
the supply areas of large industries to attend
the event as buyers.
The major methodological advance
of Mercopar with the Buyer Project was
to create the opportunity for small and
micro-entreprises to be integrated into
the supply chain, getting incentives to invest
in technology and to seek for qualitiy
certification for products and processes,
bearing in mind the need to conform to the
requirements of industrial subcontracting.
Currently, the Buyer
Project has participants (buyers and
sellers) from Brazil and abroad, and added
other two events: the Oil, Gas and Energy
Matchmaking, from 2009, and the Software
Matchmaking, from 2010, focused on IT
solutions for the metal-mechanic sector.
Internationalization
In 1998 Mercopar experienced a period
of deep conceptual review and
restructuring process, seeking for
new partnerships and for expanding
its business focus. In other words, make
it a more professional and independent
fair, with national and international
coverage. Therefrom Sebrae / RS has signed a
partnership with Hannover Fairs do Brasil.
On the following year (1999) was
implemented the concept of partner country,
once again inspired by Hannover Industrial
Fair, which had been using this strategy. In
1999 Portugal was invited to be the Mercopar
partner country. In 2000, it would be the time
for England; in 2001, for Italy; in 2002, the
Netherlands; in 2003, Spain; in2004,
Argentina; and in 2009, India.
Mercopar and its place
in an industrial setting
Mercopar first edition, in 1992, has
generated about 1 million BRL
in business, that reached 100 million
BRL in 2011, exceeding all previous
expectations. This significant
growth demonstrates the
industry qualification and Mercopar position
among major trade shows. The growth of
