6ABSTRACTThe aim of this dissertation is to demonstrate theoretical and technical conceptsapplied to the reuse of wastewater to flush toilets and how this practice can contributeto the sustainability of water resources. The scope of this work includes: water crisesthat have prompted advances in this area, the potential for reuse and its main uses,treatment required for the application of water reuse and the current debate on waterquality requirements for this.This dissertation also presents a case study of water reuse carried out in thePolytechnic School at UFBA which comprised the implementation, operation andmonitoring of a compact biological Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) for thetreatment of effluent from the toilets of the institution. Furthermore, the laboratoryresults of the monitoring for the main parameters of the WWTP and assessment ofthe results using statistical graphs are also presented.To complement this study the results of a survey attempting to identify the quality ofwater present in the toilets of the Polytechnic School of the University and that ofshopping centres in the city of Salvador are also presented. This research wascarried out within the TECLIM programme for Clean Technology and the Minimisationof Waste from the Environmental Engineering Department of the Polytechnic School.The study also evaluates the economic viability of the installation of a system of reusefor a non-residential population of 2500 people using primary and secondary effluent,the application of biological treatment and the subsequent reuse of water in toilets,cleaning of external areas of buildings and watering of gardens.Keywords: Water reuse, Wastewater, Effluent, Biological Treatment
