ABSTRACTThe efficacy of psychotherapy has been widely studied. Also important is to deepenour knowledge about the processes that occur over time in therapy. The aim of this study is toobserve how changes in therapist’s attitudes, behaviors and interactions are influenced bypatients' personality characteristics. In our study, the recordings of psychoanalyticpsychotherapy sessions, from two patients with the same therapist, were analyzed with the‘Psychotherapy Process Q-Set’ (<strong>PQS</strong>; Jones, 2000), at the beginning, 6, 12, 18, and 24 monthsof treatment. The ‘Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure' (SWAP-200; Shedler & Westen,1998), was also applied in order to characterize the two patients under study. Outcomes ofboth therapies were accessed with the SCL-90- R (Derogatis & Savitz, 2000). We observedthat the therapist was clearer, securer and more paternal with the neurotic patient; higheradherence to the psychodynamic prototype was found with the borderline patient, with whomhe adapted more his techniques over time. Keywords: Process, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, personality, Psychotherapy Process Q-Set(<strong>PQS</strong>), Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure (SWAP);30
