SOCIAL SURF IN JERICOACOARA

Teachers and students on their way to practical lessons.
Currently in Jericoacoara, 40 children from the local
community, aged between six and thirteen years, are
helped by the social action project Xavi Surf Kids, at no
cost for them.
It works on Saturdays and Sundays during the school
term, and from Monday to Monday during school
holidays. The project aims to engage the children
in leisure activities and develop their awareness
regarding citizenship. Using surfing as a tool, they
promote inclusion and encourage good social
practices.
In the project, the children learn the basics of
surfing, ecology, harmonious coexistence with the
environment, and they are encouraged to do well at
school. As a condition to take part in the project, the
children have their performance at school monitored,
and they are expected to get good results.
“Our intention is to use surfing to provide some leisure
and entertainment, and help the children become
good citizens, and we could never neglect their formal
education. We help these children enjoy themselves,
but we also have the responsibility to be attentive
to their progress at school”, says Sabrina Wenzel, the
project coordinator.
The money to maintain and buy surfboards, sunscreen
lotions, UV protective clothing, etc. comes from
