“TATTOW” ART ON THE SKIN
Tattoo is one of the most popular forms of body art
today. A permanent picture is drawn on a part of your
body putting ink into your skin with needles.
About its origin, tattooing is an ancient practice.
There are reports of tattoos made in Egypt between
4,000 and 2,000 BC, and by Polynesian, Philippine,
Indonesian and New Zealand (Maori) natives, who
used it in religious rituals.
The term ‘tattoo’ originates from the Polynesian word
“tatau” (the sound made during the execution of the
tattoo, which used thin needles made from bones
and a hammer to push the pigment into the skin). The
word tattoo as we know it today was first described
by Captain James Cook (also discoverer of surf), who
wrote the word “tattow” in his journal to describe this
practice.
Human beings have marked their bodies with
tattoos for thousands of years. These permanent
designs – sometimes plain, sometimes elaborate,
always personal – have served as amulets, status
symbols, declarations of love, signs of religious beliefs,
adornments and even forms of punishment.
Throughout tattooing history, these drawings have
always caused controversy and, in some cases, have
suffered prejudice. Today, however, people who have
pictures on their skin no longer necessarily belong to a
particular group, and drawings vary in style, form, size,
and are a form of individual expression.
It is not different in Jericoacoara, and tattoos are
highly popular, especially among extreme sports
practitioners. You often see people exhibiting
beautifully shaped bodies adorned with gorgeous
tattoos, in a true parade of body art.
A tattoo very often marks a trip, a special moment,
a loved one, a good feeling. Through symbols,
phrases, pre-elaborated drawings or even sketches
outlined in a moment of inspiration on the sands of a
deserted beach, the will to perpetuate such moment is
materialized.
And Jeri is one of those places that inspire visitors to
take back home not just ephemeral memories, but
to have those unique moments lived there marked
on their skin for good. Our tip for those who want
to have a tattoo done is always to look for qualified
professionals, who make use of disposable materials,
observe the hygiene of the place, find out about the
tattoo artists and remember the responsibility when
choosing your art because, although it is possible to
remove, a tattoo should be regarded as ‘forever’.
Our suggestion for those who want to perpetuate their
stay in Jericoacoara through a tattoo is to choose
TATOO CLINIC STRANGERS, headed by the renowned
needle artist Jordano Matias, a professional with
several international awards and almost two decades
of experience.
