A CAPOEIRA MASTER BY THE SEA!
Mestre Serê, 57, born in Areia Branca, Rio Grande do
Norte, has been a capoeira master and has been living
in Jericoacoara for over two decades. He came to Jeri
because he knew two of the locals, Amarildo and
“Pipa”, another great capoeira player who now lives
in Spain.
Mestre Serê has been playing this art since when he
was eight years old, and now he is a member of the
group Capoeira Brazil.
He was given his nickname by his first mentor, Mestre
Bagre, a fine man from Bahia. Mestre Bagre welcomed
him, taught him the first movements, and named
him Serê, who was the male equivalent of mermaid,
according to the master.
His first influences were Mestre Paulão, Canário,
Dingo, Zebrinha, Dunga, Gurgel, Mestre Bulldog, Jorge
Negão, Zé Ivan, and many others who were part of the
professional start of capoeira in Ceará.
Recently, the City Council of Fortaleza conferred
upon Mestre Serê the title of Mestre da Velha Guarda
(Master of the Old Guard). In Jeri, he teaches the art of
Capoeira Regional to locals and tourists at Pousada
Solar da Malhada, together with Daniela Brambatti,
the hostel owner and Capoeira Angola teacher.
When he arrived in Jeri, there were already some
people working with capoeira, such as Professor Zé
Manuel (Capoeira Brazil), mestrando Wesley (Erlin)
and João Nativo, who teaches the children of the
Village.
For almost two decades, Mestre Serê has been
promoting Capoeira with daily performances on the
beach, with a great “Roda”, which is already a tradition
in late afternoons in Jericoacoara. Because of the
many people he met in all these years living in this
paradise, Mestre Serê has had the opportunity to visit
some countries as a Capoeira Regional ambassador.
Mestre Serê is really proud to have trained
several new professionals of capoeira, but he is
even more proud to see that capoeira transforms
lives and turn young people into citizens.
Aos finais de tarde, na praia principal, o ritmo dos tambores e
birinbaus fazem um convite a toda a vila. “Capoeira mandou
chamar”.
In the late afternoon, at the main beach, the rhythm of drums and
berimbaus invite the whole village. “Capoeira is calling”.
