6 Meeting on SHP Market and the Environment
gathers main authorities of the sector
EVENTS
Translation Adriana Candal
The event held between September 1st and 2nd in the city of São Paulo, was organized by CERPCH (National Center of Reference for
Small Hydropower Plants) together with the Federal University of Itajubá (MG) and had the support of the Association of the sector. It is a
solid annual event where the participants debate the main aspects regarding Small Hydropower Plants (SHPs), approaching issues from legal
and institutional aspects, technology, environment to economic analyses.
The most important professionals of the sector, government representatives, NGOs and the private sector were present at the meeting.
CERPCH's Executive Secretáry, Mr. Geraldo Lúcio Tiago Filho, the president of Abragel (former APMPE) - the Brazilian association of
small and medium electric power producers), Mr. Ricardo Nino Machado Pigatto, the President of APINE – Brazilian Association of Electric
Power Independent Producers, Mr. Luiz Fernando Leone Viana and the president of the Board of the Electric Power Trading Chamber, Mr.
Antônio Carlos Fraga Machado, and Prof. Fernando Das Graças Braga da Silva, representing the rector of the Federal University of Itajubá,
Prof. Renato de Aquino Faria Nunes were present at the opening ceremony.
During the 6th edition of the meeting, there were panels for the discussion about the space of the renewables in the expansion of the offer
of electric power and the commercialization of the power from the SHPs in the auctions.
Auction for Alternative Sources of Energy
The action was carried out in August and was widely discussed
in the meeting. During his lecture, the president of the Energy Research
Company, Mr. Maurício Tolmasquim emphasized that the
auctions resulted in a purchase of 2,892.2 MW of installed power.
In power volume, this capacity corresponds to 1,159.4 MW on average.
In general, there were trades with 70 wind plants, 12 biomass
thermal power plants and 7 SHPs.
For Mr. Tolmasquim these auctions completed what had been
planned for 2013 and 2014. “Once we have a good amount of surplus
and this surplus comes from renewables, the auctions broke
two paradigms: the wind source showed itself to be cheaper than
the others and the idea that supplying with a large amount (the supply
of alternative energies) could be irregular", he continued.
Offer Expansion
During the panel “the space of renewable energy in the expansion
of the electric power offer”, the General Coodinator of Alternative
Sources of the Energy Development Department of MME, Mr.
Roberto Meira Júnior, emphasized that Brazil has an outstanding
electric matrix and occupies a privileged position in the world's scenario.
“The Brazilian scenario is differentiated, once it works with
cheap sources and our power matrix is based on hydraulic energy,
and it will continue to be over the next 20 years”, said Mr. Meira.
Mr. Meira highlighted that by 2030 a potential of 180GW will be
considered out of a potential of 260GW. This difference will take
place because of environmental issues, whose all concepts are being
reviewed aiming at smaller environmental impacts.
